7 PRC Velocities? Reality vs. expectation.

When 7PRC first came out I couldn’t stop drooling on myself. What a shooter sending 175g bullets 3000 fps in a 24” barrel!

However, Is anyone actually getting these results real world in their own rifle? I hear rumors that most guys really are not not able to achieve these speeds and that it was mostly marketing hype.

Anyone with some personal experience?

A few months ago it came out that Hornady couldn't get the powder they needed for the velocities. They claimed the powder they were using was slower but produced good accuracy. Seems shady they didnt say anything until after being questioned. Ive heard the Federal eldx were still running about 3000.

This is exactly what I was told. That Hornady was claiming 3000 fps but most guys were getting 2800(ish).

And could an average guy build up a load with readily available components?

I reload for mine in a 22 carbon six barrel and I’m getting 2980. I bought my nephew a bergerra wilderness ridge in 22 barrel. With factory Federal 175eldx it’s getting 2943.

I'm at 2930 using Berger 175 EH from a 24" tube well under max charge load.
I'm sure that I could run 3000 but this is my best accuracy and don't see the need to burn my chamber up just to say I'm getting 3K

I’m getting 2900 with a 20” and 5” suppressor. Federal ELD X 175s. I have gotten 2818 with a hand load. Still developing and breaking in the barrel.
After the whole Hornady ammo deal I was hoping to get 2700.

Complete marketing hype from Hornady factory ammo and gun builders. If you reload, you can establish the higher velocities with alpha brass or shooting federal factory it seems?

2850 with the first 8 rounds out of a 20” proof barrel using Federal 175 eldx. Not sure if it’ll speed up at all as the barrel breaks in but I’m pretty happy with that.

Using N560 and 175’s, I got as much as 2981 in a 22” barrel.

I was satisfied with just taken an old 270 win and I re-barreled it with a fast twist 1-8 . With RL26 I get just over 2,900 fps with a Berger 170 EOL , 26” barrel.

Made sense for me I have roughly 350 pieces of 270 brass and it delivers crazy performance

Y’all really have to get over yourselves and separate the cartridge from the ammo manufacturer. Yes Hornady introduced and marketed it. Yes they have had a change in powder and now their ammo shoots slower. Yes it’s stupid they don’t say anything or at least adjust the velocity listed on their box.

But none of that has any impact on the 7 PRC cartridge. Federal clearly still hits those higher velocities. If you choose not to hand load you’re unfortunately at the mercy of ammo manufacturers. It’s a good cartridge with good capabilities.

That's my plan when I finally shoot my barrel out. A fast twist 270 Win is ridiculously capable

My 22” barreled gun gets pressure signs at 2900 fps with 180 ELD using H1000, 4831sc, Staball HD.

N570 with 195’s I got up to 2930 at Bergers published max.

Will try N570 with 175/180’s and I also have retumbo but haven’t used any with the 7prc.
