6x45

I built a 9 twist 6x45 on a Sako Vixen action using a Hart barrel. Barrel is same length and contour os original was, 23” I believe. I shoot 100gr bullets and hunt deer in the Adirondacks with it. Feeds flawlessly from original magazine. One built on a longer action would give greater COAL but wouldn’t be of Vixen (Bofors) quality. I’ve taken a few bucks with it inside of 100 yards. It’s one of my favorite rifles and would be one of the last I’d sell. I shoot once fired Lake City brass and bought 1,000 pieces for under $100. Brass forming is one pass on FL sizing die. Currently shooting 95 gr Partitions with Rl15 (extremely accurate), bucks were shot with 100gr Norma Oryx and H4895. For where I hunt the ARC would give me nothing additional. If I need more (never have) I’d step up to a .243 Win (I have two) or bigger. Great cartridge, lots of fun and cheap to shoot. Love it. Currently building a Mini Grendel. If you decide to build one you won’t be disappointed if you understand its capabilities going in. Have fun.

I’ve got a Brux barrel on the way for a 6x45 build. It’s headed to my gunsmith at 29”. Thinking of finishing at 28”. This will be a single feed paper punching/local match gun. What do you think about that length?

I don’t shoot matches so have no experience with barrels that long. Brux has a great reputation, should be a great shooter.

I had one of my 6x45 barrels cut down to 16” and fluted by Kampfeld. It’s on the way back to me and I’ll be playing with that shortly. I’ve never done a 16” so I’m curious to know what velocities I’ll get.

Just dropped off my action and barrel with the dummy we talked about to him Tuesday. He said he is clambering one for another guy soon and would do mine the same time.

Can't wait to hear what you get to happen with your 16"

Bumping this up to the top as I am having a 6x45 built after looking at this round for a year or so.

Excited to get it and play with a new round. Thanks for all the great data and help to a couple of you out there.

Keep talking 6x45
A jr hunter I take out used my 6x45 with the 87gr vmax on his blacktail doe tag. Shot was about 70 yards. Hopefully these upload in order.
Stock photo to show impact location (we need to work on shooting fundamentals).
Exit side starting to skin.
More skin pulled away.
Even more.
Impact side with no quarters.
Chest cavity, hard to see the little holes, but you can see the damage to the front of the chest.
Exit side with no quarters.
Exit side leg bone and damaged meat.

I was happy to see the damage with a “sub par” shot. It was fatal as she laid down after about 15 yards of hobbling uphill. We crested the ridge and finished her off at close range. It was an “eye popping” experience. Didn’t take any photos as it wasn’t appropriate for him to share with others. Those who go with young ones know they will show/tell to the wrong crowds and the wrong times, I know I did 20 years ago.

Edit to add, it’s a 16” barrel at 2700ish fps. I need to chrono it again. Maybe this weekend

Glad that worked so well. I imagine a solid copper bullet would have resulted in a potential rodeo. That 87 caught extreme front of lungs perhaps? Regardless, rapid expansion is your friend on these types of hits. Glad they had a good experience. They'll do better next time but hey, it worked great! Nice work.

It was raining so hard when he shot, I wasn’t in the necropsy mood. My last step of gutting is pulling the trachea/heart/lungs out in one go and I just tossed it so we could get to dragging her out. I’d imagine it was the very front of the lungs, or a major artery (or two) off the front of the heart. Either way it was a lot more damage than I would have expected with the impact location. Right there with what I would have expected from a 130gr out of a 270 win.
