6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

~150 lb Hog at 46 yrds offhand. 6CM 108 ELDM @ 2915 fps.

Bullet entered high shoulder.


Hole behind the hide was about 30 caliber.


Behind the shoulder the wound cavity had expanded to about golf ball size, taking out two ribs and shattering the shoulder into pieces.


Bullet lodged in the far side hide. Roughly 12-14 inches of penetration.

Been researching a fast twist 243. Settled on a Weatherby 307 7.5 twist. Anybody got any experience with 115 bergers out of one of these? Thinking about loading some up for this deer season

Saami 243 throat isn't going to fit the 115 very well, it needs even more freebore than a 6cm due to the short throat. If you're above 3k da the 115 should stabilize fine. There are better bullets out there tho. The 108 elite hunter was made to replace the 115, same bc with hybrid ogive and very easy to tune. 109 eldm have been great for me as well, but these bullets are all gonna be deep in the case due to ancient chamber geometry of the saami 243.

I know we have a few examples but has anyone done enough testing to figure out what kind of wound channel difference is usually seen between the 95gr NBT and the 90gr eldx. Just curious how much of a difference one could really expect as far as penetration and wound width.

While I haven't, my theory would be that the front half/3/4 of the wound channel would look very similar but that the NBT would drive a bit further due to the jacket being thicker near the base of the bullet.

ive got 3 6 creeds and have mainly shot hornady 105 and 108s for deer and hogs..
This gun so far hasn’t shot those well. It also didn’t shoot the 95gr NBT’s good. It stacked 85 gr Sierra bthp and 95gr tmk handloads.. Also shot the factory 95gr fusions very well…
I don’t have a lot of tmks left. Any reason not to just shoot deer and hogs with the Sierra Hp gamekings on deer and hogs ? Don’t really need to worry about the BC cause all shots will be under 300yds

Haven’t shot the 6mm gamekings but the 30 cal version have done well for me

Those 6mm 85gr Sierra Gameking JHPBT are money in a 243 sub 400 yards. They kill very well.

they can lack penetration some compared to other bullets discussed here but they fragment heavily and make great wounds in deer sized game.

With the 8tw I'm tempted to say that you should try the 112 match burners.

This is the way to go for a ranch gun in my opinion. I payed $400 for a blued tikka 243win along time and and had it cut down to 16”. I have several short barreled setups and it’s still one of my favorites for 400 and in. With 100gr RN monarch ammo I bought for 50cents/round it runs 2700fps and shot well out to 500yards. The PPU 90gr shoots well also and it’s cheap ($16/box) It’s plenty for deer and hogs. The 100gr monarch was still getting full pass throughs on deer out to 230yards. Mine is a 10 twist and used to shoot it out to 750yards regularly with 87gr bthp handloads. The 8 twist you have will be even better.

Took my youngest brother thermal hunting the other night. Let him shoot since I’m recovering from shoulder surgery.

18” 6mm creed shooting factory 108 eldm’s
Impact velocity around 2700 fps.

Bang flopped this bad boy when shot right behind the shoulder. He didn’t even kick.
Bullet immediately started opening up . Went all the way through him and I’m guessing got stuck in his “shield” on the opposite side, never found it.

I am using the 85 gr. Gameking out of one of my 243's this year. It will go to Wyoming, Oklahoma and here in Texas. The other 243 is a 1-8 twist and I am still considering what to shoot in it. Probably the Speer 100 gr. SPBT because I have a bunch of them and so far it has performed admirably. If I hadn't experienced spotty performance out of Hornady's BTHP in another diameter I would run the 105 BTHP of theirs. Might play with the 112 Matchburners.

Hopefully I can get some data on how the 85gr Sierra HPs perform on hogs soon.
I wouldn’t be worried about the 105 bthp. They have performed flawless for me in 18” and 20” 6creeds. Hard to find an entrance when they go in, but so far they have always opened up , wrecked havoc on the inside and then still exited

What kind of impact velocities with the Speer 100 BTSP, terminal performance and penetration?

I bought a box to mess with in a 6x45. Thought they might make good shorter range bullets in that cartridge (?)...

Would have bought the 85s as well but they weren't in stock. Thinking the 85s might be a good, inexpensive bullet for that cartridge (?).
