6mm/22 disappointment thread

Last year I drank the kool aid and started hunting with a 6 creed paired with a match style bullet. I was fortunate enough to take a mature buck and a bull with it, and I was very satisfied with the terminal performance in both cases. That said, both shots were slightly quartering away, which has me wondering how much of that outcome was shot angle versus bullet choice, and whether a wide range of bullets would perform similarly in that scenario.

I’d like to hear from anyone who has been hunting with a 6mm or smaller cartridge and experienced less than satisfactory performance. Specifically, I’m interested in situations where the animal was ultimately recovered, but the outcome raised concerns. If there are cases where an animal was lost and the hunter has useful observations or lessons learned, those would be valuable to share as well.

This thread isn’t meant to sway anyone’s opinion on the overall effectiveness of smaller cartridges. I think that has been proven. The goal is simply to keep our feet on the ground and acknowledge that real world hunting scenarios don’t always go as planned. If there are issues or limitations that tend to show up with smaller diameter bullets, understanding them may help improve decision making and effectiveness going forward.

Thanks for sharing!
