New to Rokslide so let me know if this is the wrong group. I am currently thinking if re-barreling a 300wsm to 6.5PRC to cut back on recoil. Primary use is whitetail and elk in the northwest 400yds and in as that’s as far as i’m confident shooting. After listening to a bunch of podcasts and reading forums a new rifle in 6CM has come up with either a 116tmk or 108 eldm. My main priority is a quick ethical kill followed by recoil reduction. Any assistance would be appreciated me and my friends have only been hunting seriously for the last 5 years and are still learning. Any advice would he appreciated before i drop a couple grand on a new build.

Yea the idea would be heavy for caliber on a 20 or 22in barrel to keep MV up with and unknown 6og-s if i got that route.

With your existing bolt face, 6.5 PRC should work well.

You could look at cutting the 300 WSM down and suppressing it. That will tame recoil noticeably. A muzzle break even more so, but I hate those things almost as much as I do talking someone out of buying another rifle.

I’d probably keep the 300 and buy a short barreled stainless 6.5 Creedmore and a suppressor. That new Federal ammo jumps its velocity to 6.5 PRC levels. Would give you moderate recoil and plenty of velocity to well beyond 400 in a handy package, even when suppressed.

400 yards and in it doesn’t matter. Pick literally any bullet that will expand and don’t miss. Shot placement is the most effective cartridge. Pick whichever one you’ll shoot the most

Personally my 6.5 prc non braked kicks more than my braked 300 RUM. So not thinking the prc is enough of a recoil difference to be worth the hassle. Buy a 6cm, suppress it and you will likely be impressed.

6CM new build it is then. Spotting shots 400 and in would be ideal. I’ll venture over to the reloading forums and start digging. Thanks for the info gentleman.

Probably UM tikka action and benchmark barrel on a rokstok and see what happens.

Does anybody have trouble reloading the 115 bergers or 116 tmk’s to short mag length?

I have a 6.5PRC, and it's a great cartridge, but I prefer the 6CM. Within your range limit, both will kill with no issues. Do you reload? I have not seen much factory-loaded 116TMK ammo.
