6 PRC reloading

I have an extra 6 Creed barrel that I wanna get punched out to a PRC. It’s a 7 twist though and 26” which worries me that a lot of bullets won’t make it to the target. Anyone have words of encouragement?

I would not do it. You will be around 330,000 RPM. It might be okay but also very likely not. That 6 Creed must be already getting great speed out of a 26”. With your RPMs already exceeding 300k so that’s already marginal and would scare me, especially suppressed.

I know it’s what you already have but there’s no reason I know of that anybody should ever be running a 7 twist 6mm. 7.5-8 is the sweet spot and you even see in the Hornady manual that they use a test barrel for 6creed has 7.7 twist.

Unfortunately 7 twist was my only option with the barrel. Haven’t had any issues yet but the added velocity of the PRC makes me wonder what bullets would survive the journey. Monos aside

I think .180 is still where you’ll want to be. Let’s give an example that .200 would be optimum for it. So you chamber it that way. Then the gun doesn’t like that bullet. Almost everything else you’d shoot out of it would be seated kinda too far out of the case, or jumping a long ways. .180 is just a really good spot.
Schmo,
Wondering where you landed on load dev and what speeds your seeing with the 18?

Load dev isn’t “complete” lol. However, with 4831SC (which leaves velocity on the table), I am running the 108 ELD and 112MB right at 3,050 fps out of my 18”. My barrel doesn’t care for the 112MB too much. Using a better powder, 3100 fps is absolutely doable, maybe 3150.

3100-3150 with a match burner?? That would be awsome. Im planning to order the 18 in preferred barrel on the group buy so this is the info I need. I estimated my numbers on 3100 with a 108 Berger and 3000 with the MB. I’ll be interested in anymore data you have or find but it appears the 18 will do what I need. You ever wish you woulda went longer?

Yeah I think 3100 is an accurate number. You could get a fast barrel, or a slow one, so there’s that.

On the barrel length, absolutely haven’t wanted any longer. I’d possibly go shorter, but not longer.

How much 4831sc did you land on and what brass?

I got a spicy 6.5 PRC load out of my 18” with 135 bergers up to 3040 with 4031sc.

Sorry to take away from your load data, I see PBB has prefits for both 6PRC and 6UM right now. Are you all happy with your 6PRC? Any thoughts one way or another? Looks like they are darn close and the 6PRC seems like the easier button.

The UM will give a little more velocity, but brass is only made by ADG, or else you have to use 6.5 SAUM brass. The 6 PRC gives terminal effectiveness to 850 -1,000 yards, and brass is super plentiful as 6.5 PRC. Single step neck down

I probably woulda went 6um30 other than the dies are spendy and I already have prc does so just a new bushing. I also don’t need the few extra fps.

I just necked down some gunwerks and adg 6.5 prc brass using my arc bushing, which is .266. Way to small and got the trumpet look. All loaded rounds measure .274-.2745. Only loaded 3 but I see most are using .271. Anyone with adg care to share what bushing they are using. I’m not planning to use a mandrel so setting NT with the bushing.

Edit to add, i see huntnful is using .001, in leaning towards the .003, is that going to be to much, I usually stick around .002-.003 but I do t experiment much. Is .003 to much? Anyone seen ill effects?

You already got a couple replies and I am just now building my first 6 PRC, but I’ll give you my reasoning.

6 PRC Pro’s
  • Cheaper and more 6.5 brass availability with simple neckdown
  • Cheaper and more 6.5 bushing die availability
  • Cheaper head space gauge rental availability
  • Slightly less overbore if the extra velocity isn’t needed for slightly better barrel life and theoretically less finicky load dev
  • Better reamer availability at prefit makers without paying additional fee (UM is catching up here)
6 UM Pro’s
  • Higher case capacity if velocity is ultimate goal
  • Matching headstamped brass if required for international hunts
Neither of the 6 UM pro’s applied to my use case and I’m already setup with 6.5 PRC bushing dies, brass, trimmer, etc. so it was a significant cost savings compared to going with the 6 UM.

What are the average velocity ppl see with a 22inch barrel with 108s and the 112s?

I have a 22” Bartlein and ran a few tests when I was looking for a load

112 MB
H1000 57gr 3140 fps
N565 57.5gr 3170 fps
N570 59.5 3190 fps

108 Berger EH

H1000 57.5gr 3182 fps
Retumbo 58gr 3176 fps
N570 61gr 3279 fps
And my current load is 57.6gr n565 @ 3225fps

Thank you everyone for your replies. Sure sounds like a great one and pretty easy.
