I normally figure around 35 fps loss per inch of barrel reduction. Have you found this assumption to hold true to the 6mm class of bullets? I have a threaded 26” barrel that I’m debating on cutting down to 22” for a suppressor, just considering the cost/benefits of getting it done. Or leaving the barrel as is, using a 6” suppressor.

I have a 24" 6gt hunting buuld, running 112 barnes at 2910 with 36.4 gr H4350, my match rifles are 28" barrels, 36.5gr H4350 109lrht at 2930, different powder lot.
I was thinking of taking it down to 22”. With 108’s or 105’s. Looks like I’d be in the 2850fps, which wouldn’t be terrible.

I’ve got a 22” lightweight hunting 6GT. My go to load is 34.5 of varget behind 110 a-tips. Runs exactly 2850. When I got my 26” PPR from GAP I tossed the same load in it just because and it chronoed 2870. Obviously the Varget is more optimal for the short barrel.

That’s encouraging news. I have varget on hand, and that was where I am going to start with load development. Thanks for posting your experience👍🏻

How many rounds on the ppr at that point? If low round count, that will likely speed up 50-70fps by 200 rounds.

~50-60 rounds at that point. It’ll likely speed up a little but I’m not too worried if it doesn’t either, I’m not chasing speed.

The FPS loss per inch thing isn't as drastic as traditionally assumed in all cases. I had a 6BR barrel that I cut from 25" down to 20" last year, and I lost only about 50fps total with the very same load. These little, efficient cartridges get a lot of the burning done with in a hurry. FYI I was shooting 108 Bergers at 2780fps at 25", down to 2730fps at 20" using Varget. 6GT will be similar. I also chopped a 6XC for a friend down from 23" to 19" this year, and he lost i think 60 or 80fps he said. Get it chopped, you'll be glad you did.
