6 Dasher thread

Nice I’ve been waiting for you to post this up, thanks for this. I’ll definitely be putting one of these together. I’m not sure I’ll get rid of my 223, but it might start collecting dust if I put one of these together.

As far as aics mags go, I have a spat of them. I do not have a Hawkins mag, if the new version ends up working I may try them. All the mags pictured have worked very well.

Pictured. 12 round MDT BR/dasher mag, 10 round AI w/ primal rights kit, 10 round MDT BR/dasher mag, AI 5 round with primal rights kit (makes it a 4 rounder)

I use the 4 rounders for hunting. The ai mags are a definite step up in quality to the mdt imo.

My solution to cheaper practice ammo that I can also use on animals. 87 v max can be found cheap, are decent in BC, and are said to be good on prairie dogs to deer.

87vmax are going 3000fps out of my 21” without pushing any pressure. Random charge and seating depth made sub 1” 10 shot.

I want a 6cm specifically to be able to get the 108/108ELDM or the 107TMK to 500 yards with 2000' left over here at home (660') even on cold days.

That is *juuuust* a hair further than the 6Dasher should do at 17 to 18" of barrel unless I really step on it. That leaves me in the 6gt/6cm realm.

At this point I think the 6cm is the easiest and least painful route for me. I could get a .243W 8 twist and have it reamed to AI for brass life, but that brings on more recoil than I want to generate to hit my target speed (2750' to 2800' with an 18"ish).

My hope is to go the 6cm route and be able to hit my target speed with a less than max charge of maybe VVN550 and have relatively low (by 6mm standards) recoil and good barrel life (due to the lower pressures), and easily available prefit barrels if Tikka doesn't hurry and offer a 6cm.

Of course, none of this is a huge hurry for me. The 6.5cm I got for the kids last summer has demonstrated itself to make hits out to 500 awfully easy, even for my kids.

ETA: All this to say that I really like the idea of the 6Dasher but it's *juuuust* a hair slower than what I want, I think. I want 2750' from a 107TMK from an 18" and still be a full grain below max pressure with a relatively fast burning powder.

I can make dummy rounds with 109eldms and chamber them into a 243/6creed to function test as a baseline for folks. Can't run it super fast since they won't extract via the bolt most likely but it'll flag any issues feeding in at least.
I just tested the latest mag you sent with my Dasher dummies, cursory results look good to go.

ETA: if you want some retired brass I have kinda a lot…

Shorter barrels will neuter it like any other cartridge. Personally I have gone to longer barrels. I’d rather carry a slightly longer barrel than deal with a finicky cartridge or barrel life that’s going to require a yearly change.

In steps the OG 65 and hopefully the new 6mm version; this means I can run more barrel and keep it under 26” still. Beyond that is annoying to me and under it looks cool but dosnt do me any better in the field.

Carrying an extra 2-4” of barrel is nothing to me when I can shoot it all year and not worry about it acting up come hunting season.

Of course this all varies on how much your shooting. The bigger cases have their place for sure. But it sure is nice just shooting the same thing all the time. Flight time, impact spotting, drops all being the same all year has been nice. Could have easily just done it with a 6.5cm too, but it’s just enough recoil and heat to get annoying on range days.

Where does the 25 creed fall in all of this? Seems it would be easier than the 6 dasher and still accomplish all your other goals at the downside of more recoil?

More recoil, more powder burned, more heat, likely less barrel life. Much shorter track record in regards to accuracy and consistency. To me it’s just another creedmoor, and I have owned all three of the others.

The amount of powder being burned has a lot to do with recoil imo. Even the 22 creedmoor had more felt recoil than my 6 dasher does.

I shot 6 creed for PRS for a few years. It’s a great cartridge but I couldn’t use it as a one rifle to rule them all. I think the 25 would likely fall right there too. I’d need another rifle (223). Then at that point I’m not learning my rifle and ballistics all summer because I’m shooting my 223. That is exactly why I started the dasher experiment last year.

If you get it dialed, I’ll order mags. Everything I’ve got from you so far has been great
I don't know that there is any dialing left to do, it just needs to be validated.

Sweet, I figured by the time it was feeding the arc and BR it should be fine with dasher but you don't know till its tried.

@KyleR1985 said he's send me some dasher brass. If you have some BR brass that is retired I wouldn't mind some pieces for messing with / periodically checking mags.

Are you not changing to 87vmax for everything but hunting?

Yes and no. For me it’s mainly for prairie dogs. For a do all rifle I need it to be decent at blowing up a prairie dog. Positional practice at 100 type stuff and can double duty as a mid range round. AG hunting sub 300 yards, stuff like that. But prairie dogs was originally my target for the 87vmax.

I also am shooting dasher/105s for PRS all year. So I’m seeing thousands of heavy 6mm bullets going down range throughout the year. Part of why I wanted to shoot something the same for comp stuff as I do my hunting gun.

Great thread, I built one a few years ago from used parts and a blemished barrel (half price).

Just for a fun gun at the range. Sadly, I haven't shot it since fire forming brass. It did excellent for me routinely shooting 1 inch groups at 300 yards.

Planning to pull it out of the safe this year and shoot a few. I'd really like to knock 6 inches off the barrel, downsize the scope and throw a can on it for a fun deer / hog rifle.

Savage target action, B&C stock, Bart barrel and a Burris XTR III.
