What ammunition would you recommend for elk within 600 yards using a 20" barrel in 6 ARC?

Hornady 103 or the 108 match, both should have enough impact velocity out to around 500 at 2600 fps muzzle velocity depending on your elevation

6 ARC wouldn’t be my first choice, but the 108 ELDM should work well.

I’m running factory 108 ELD-M in mine right now. 20” barrel on a howa mini action. Pushing them 2590 fps. Gets me to 600 yards and a hair over 1800 fps impact velocity. I don’t really push my ARC past 500 yards but they are a fun little cartridge. Probably work up some hand loads and see what I can come up with.

I prefer 200gr copper bullets out of my 6mm. It provides more wallop. Nocks down the toughest of field mice.

While not my first choice, I am getting 2950 out of a 16” barrel and 75g bullet. That would work for copper. I still think the 108 eldm would be my first choice.

Shot a cow this year at 215 with 103eldx. Worked great. One round was all I needed, she travelled about 10 yards before tipping over. Wouldn’t hesitate to shoot one out to 600 with that. Wouldn’t hesitate to use the 108eldm either. They are good bullets too. Not as splashy as the eldm.

These CAN work BUT distance and shot placement are key. Practice practice practice with whatever round you are going to use. No room for error.

It is because a thinly jacketed bullet will disrupt more, causing more damage and therefore a quicker kill. Can you kill something with copper? Absolutely, but copper bullets by and large do not have the rapid expansion properties as thin jacketed lead bullets. This is not opinion. This is fact. Lead is softer than copper and can be manipulated easier (expand faster).

Since the 6ARC is starting at slower velocities than larger 6mm cartridges you are doing yourself no favors by using copper if you are prioritizing violent upsets inside the body cavity. If your priorities are different(no one is saying what your priorities need to be. They can be different based on the hunt), then the discussion is different. Hope that helps steer some light.

This is not the cartridge for a 600y shot on an elk.. Recommended minimum impact energy is 1500 ft-lbs, and while that's a suggestion... You really are going to want something close to that, or you're just going to wound the animal.
