6.8 Western Build Discussion

Dedicating a thread for those looking at the 6.8 Western. Hoping this thread provides a resource to limit the barriers to building a rifle around this fantastic cartridge, which has limited following. If you have a build out there on the 6.8 Western share here.

I am no expert as this is my first build, but it is my hope that my build and others builds can help anyone out there trying to build around this cartridge.

Here is my build to start: Defiance Classic, 20” Benchmark, HNT26, NXS 2.5-10. This build shows MSRP costs which are higher than actual as I shopped discounts and my actual weight came out slightly less than my calculations with a total weight of 8lbs 10oz fully loaded with bipod on the kitchen scale.

That not uncommon with the parts he chose. I don’t see any gunsmithing costs though. He doesn’t mention a pre fit barrel so I’m assuming that is additional cost as well.

My costs were $320 total to chamber barrel and nitride the barrel connection, sorry I forgot to add that. I also took a full two years for the build and took advantage of sales to slowly bring the pieces together but this was an expensive build for sure! This is actually the first Ive ever rifle purchased with only shooting hand-me-downs prior and wanted a build singular rifle for everything I do, with the “buy once, cry once” mentality.

The only thing I’m still trying to solve is a polymer magazine that works with the mdt and 6.8 western if anybody has a lead, preferably a 5 round. I have a 3 round metal magazine that I’m not satisfied with yet.
