6.8 Western Build Discussion

Dedicating a thread for those looking at the 6.8 Western. Hoping this thread provides a resource to limit the barriers to building a rifle around this fantastic cartridge, which has a far too limited following. If you have a build out there on the 6.8 Western please share here, or you have 6.8 build questions here is the place for it.

Here is my build to start: Defiance Classic, 20” Benchmark, HNT26, NXS 2.5-10. This build shows MSRP costs which are higher than actual as I shopped discounts and my actual weight came out slightly less than my calculations with a total weight of 8lbs 10oz fully loaded with bipod on the kitchen scale.

That not uncommon with the parts he chose. I don’t see any gunsmithing costs though. He doesn’t mention a pre fit barrel so I’m assuming that is additional cost as well.

My costs were $320 total to chamber barrel and nitride the barrel connection, sorry I forgot to add that. I also took a full two years for the build and took advantage of sales to slowly bring the pieces together but this was an expensive build for sure! This is actually the first rifle I’ve ever purchased so I wanted to do this one exactly how I dreamed as every other rifle I’ve had to this point has been a hand-me-down.

The only thing I’m still trying to solve is a polymer magazine that works with the mdt and the 6.8 western if anybody has a lead, preferably a 5 round. I have a 3 round metal magazine currently.

Nice build. I already own a 6.8W, an X-bolt. It’s an impressive cartridge. Good luck with your project.

Buddy and I had to get a reamer (Manson), collets and go no-go guage

I'll add that I already had the action from a 6.5 Creed and 6.5 PRC build to swap barrels around on
I got the Manners stock due to the difference between the OD of the Brux compared to the Proof 6.5 barrels.
