6.5CM Ideal Barrel Length (No Suppressor)

I'm looking to get a new Tikka in 6.5cm, but debating the length to cut(/not cut). Not looking to run a suppressor right now, will probably be doing a brake.

I'd like to run factory-only TTSX, LRX and some ELD out to 500 yards.

What would you think the ideal barrel length for that would be? Seems people here run so many barrels.

Kindest regards.

The shortest barrel length that gets you to the range you want with the velocity you want. Focus on the monos, whatever you choose for them will work for the ELDs too. Play around with a ballistic calculator.

Do you usually just take the ammo boxes velocities on the back and subtract 25fps/inch for a ballpark? I know Tikka usually run slow.

Full 24+" factory length. Factory ammo + tikka 6.5 creed barrel = slow. You'll want that velocity and I don't find a 24" barrel cumbersome at all without a suppressor. I also wouldn't want to make a rifle with a brake any louder by shortening the barrel.

Probably be slower than that calc in a tikka barrel.

I'd guess you'd be closer to looking at back of box -100 FPS minus an additional 25 FPS per inch shorter than 24". But all of that is ammo lot and temperature specific.

Great insight, thank you. I've only ran a bare 22" Axis so far and got caught up in the short discussions here lol. I was definitely concerned about factory copper if I chopped the Tikka.

Yeah man, I like a handy rifle but maybe its just being used to suppressors or heavier/long barrel/longer range rifles that a standard sporter with 22-24" feels handy. Suppressors make handling cumbersome and that is the driver behind all the short barrels IMO. You want all the velocity help you can get with tikka 6.5 and factory ammo. Basically all factory 6.5 creed ive chronoed in a tikka is in the neighborhood of 100 fps slower than advertised velocity. That goes for norma, federal, berger, and hornady.

Is this "slowness" unique to Tikka 6.5 creeds or is this generally true of all calibers in all Tikkas? What about the .243 Win?
