6.5 PRC velocity and barrel length?

Wow Good velocities for short barrels. I have a 22 in bbl suppressed and only get 2665 average 10 shots. The rifle is new to me, ammo was Norma golden target 143 gr 6.5 prc. I have'nt had time to load anything up for it. I was a little disappointed with the low numbers. Of course Norma says 2986 out of a 26 in. bbl. with 4 inch difference thats a big drop in velocity.

300fps for 4"? dang.

Yea. The high was 2710 low was 2599. I am hopeing it is just the ammo.

Just ran 20 rounds down a fierce Roque CT 20" bbl. disappointing velocities 2743 was high 2534 low. The string was shot during break in. let bbl. cool cleaned etc. Norma 143 factory. Golden Target. Going to work up some 140's and see what happens. Cold bore shots seemed to be the worst ave 2583-99 . All shot through a Pro chornograh.

Apologies for reviving an old thread. I have an 18" Tikka 6.5 PRC (barrel was cut and threaded by class 3 machine). Using H4831SC and 135 A tips i pressured out at 0.5 grains above Hornady book max, and barely broke 2800. Barrel has roughly 90 rounds through it, so it may speed up a bit, but I have never seen Tikka barrels speed up much.

Currently trying to work a load with 129 ABLRs and H1000 so we will see how that goes.

I was advised to try N565, and several people say they are able to push the 156 Bergers at pretty surprising velociites when compared to the 140/147 ELDM. Anyone have any starting data with 565 and the bergers (even the ABLR).

Currently debating if it is worth having another 18" 6.5 PRC barrel cut in case my barrel is just really slow, or if I should step up to a 7 PRC/300WSM (18-20" barrel) just to put a bit more ass behind it. This is a 500 yard and in hunting rifle, and I am trying to keep it short. Any insight is appreciated.

Any reason you need more velocity for a sub 500yd hunting gun?

Try R25. Mine liked it more than H1000.

I should preface that by saying that currently I am a 500 and in shooter with this rifle. I would like it to be able to grow with me as I become more practiced and confident in field shooting positions. I have shot to a mile several times, however not with a light hunting rifle, nor from any position but extremely stabilized prone. I primarily am a mule deer hunter, and for deer/antelope I have no issues with where it is at (though its BARELY beating what I was able to achieve in a 20" creedmoor with the same bullet weight class which saddens me). If I am lucky enough to draw an elk tag and am able to start chasing more game, I simply would like more out of it. I know energy really doesn't matter as much as impact velocity, but I'd still like more. Just a personal "want" at this point

Had a Mullerworks carbon cut from 26 to 20, when in it's 26" config, I ran 156s at 3050 with N570 in ADG brass. Now after losing the length and adding a can, N565 is showing pressure with 156s at 2780. Switched to 140 Bergers in lapua brass, H1000 running it at 2850, shooting very well here. A short barrel prc is essentially a long barrel 65cm. If I was doing a dedicated short magnum in 6.5mm, and wanted as much velocity as possible without pressure, I'd likely buy some ADG 270wsm brass and neck it down, or Saum improved.

I changed over to H1000, moving up with 140's 2860+-. No pressure signs and 1 grain below max.

One build I'm considering is a Howa 1500 #6 contour (heavy) 24" barrel. It's going to be a bench and box blind hunting rifle so I want max performance. I'm going to put a can on it too.

That is a potential future option. I'll burn the barrel out of this (or at least try to, im impulsive) before I do that. A short 264 sm, Saum improved or moving to a short barreled 300 wsm is the future plan.
