6.5 prc reticle

Bought a Leupold VX5 HD and the CDS would not dial. Tried two different guns and 5 different ammo's. Took it back and standard duplex did the job on mule deer 150 yards and antelope 280 yards. Don't hunt out west much farthest shots I take are 30 yards with my bow.

Looking at a reticle for my 6.5 prc. 200 yard zero. What reticle/optic is best for hold over for 300 yard and 400 yard shot. I will never take a longer shot than 400 yards with an outfitter, just don't shoot long distance enough and dont want to risk a wounded animal. Longest shot out west so far was my antelope at 280.

So the question....is there a reticle that would make sense for 6.5 prc shooting 143 grain eldx?

Ex: VX-Freedom 4-12X40 Creedmoor. This would be perfect and all I'm looking for.

4.5-14x40mm Leupold with the B&C reticle would be really good for the distances that you are shooting. Up to 500 yards it works well and is simple to use. I have one on my 280AI and my son has the same scope on his 6mm Remington. Here's what it looks like. You zero for 200 yards and you use the hash marks for the farther distances.

You would have to figure out what magnification the scope has to be on for them to be close to correct for your specific ballistics. They will only be close to right at one specific magnification. Not the whole power range of the optic.

If youre going to use reticle holds with a 2fp scope and a prc or another cartridge that has any noticeable recoil, I strongly prefer a maximum magnification of 10x or less. This is because I’ve never seen anyone legitimately able to use any power other than max to use the holdovers without a lot of errors when under pressure, and above this magnification the field of view is too narrow and it’s very easy if there is any cover to lose an animal in your fov. This prevents seeing where it went in case blood trail is poor or hard to follow, and it makes it hard to see animals reaction on the shot to gauge whether a follow-up is warranted, how quickly to follow, and slows your followup shot if you need one.
My personal choice would be either one of the trijicon 3-9ish scopes with a mil-dot reticle if you want 2fp, or a S&B klassic with capped turrets and their P3l reticle in FFP (which IS legitimately useable at low magnification, and is just a mil-dot reticle), which will allow you to use the reticle accurately at any magnification. Mils line up well if you zero at 100, past there its 1/2mil for 200, 1mil 300, 2mils 400, and past 300 it’s .1 for each 10 yards allowing you to more accurately hold between hashes for any odd distances (ie animals rarely stand right on the 300 yard marker, they’ll always be at 337). This will always vary with exact load and altitude, but it’ll keep you within a tenth or 2–certainly as accurate as the distance-based reticles, and in my experience more accurate and easier to use in the field.

If you don't shoot enough to be proficient, stick with the duplex.
