6.5 PRC Feedback

It's a modern 270 with better bullets from an external ballistics perspective. The 140 range will be fine on anything in North America and any African game without a caliber restriction, just pick a bullet that makes the wounds you want.

Like the 270 close shots with the more frangible bullets makes for a lot of meat damage. That isn't a bad thing, just something to be aware of.

I'm more partial to my 6mms than my 6.5 prc but it is very effective when placed properly.

I am looking at a 6.5 PRC and wanted some feedback from folks who have used this caliber personally. I am considering the 140 grain range of ammo. Game will be mid size game….deer, sheep etc. Based on ft pounds of energy looks ok at least up to 600 yards and that’s about my max personal ethics limit in the field. I am not interested in more firepower as I have guns that will deliver a bigger payload already. Thanks in advance for comments.

I had a 6.5 PRC. I sold it after I concluded that it couldn't do much (at reasonable hunting distances) more than my 6.5 CM. Although there are a couple of outliers, I was stuck with 140-150 class bullets.

My opinion: the 308-based cases, including the 7-08 and two Creedmoors have a relatively similar level of performance. The 6.5PRC is a small step up from them in power, but not enough to justify moving up to the PRC if you have any good rifles in the 308 based cartridges.

The 6.8W is a better cartridge that can sling a 145g bullet really fast or a heavier bullet really fast. I get more velocity with factory Winchester 165g ABLR ammo from my 6.8W than I did with Hornady Match 6.5prc ammo.

I kept my 6.5CM as might light shooting gun and and the 6.8W for when I really want to up the power.

18” barrel 6.5prc

Berger 156g factory & 143g handloads - I think Barnes bullets - need to verify that was this box. Handloads better SD and accuracy but for hunting purposes, hard to justify since difference is so small.

I want to try 130g Federal in my 6.5prc because they’re my preferred factory load in my 7prc. I stocked up on 156g Bergers for better energy at range but for whitetail and black bear it’s a bit of overkill.

I like my 6.5prc. I have a 7prc too with a 24”. I like both but a bit of an overlap in ability but I take the 6.5 for tighter quarters and the 7 in places I may reach out over 600. I’m a tad more accurate at distance with the 7prc - it’s longer and heavier.

Once you start chopping barrels on overbore you lose a lot of velocity.
There are cost factors:

With 143gr
6.5 Creedmoor 2700 - 2800fps - 24" barrel, burns 45gr powder
6.5 PRC - 2950 - 3000fps - 24" barrel, burns 61 - 68gr powder

That is about 200fps difference = 100yds added range in BC value.
BC value = .625 (G1) .315 (G7)

PRC with 20" barrel = fps loss of 25fps - 50fps per inch = 100 - 200fps loss
2700 - 2800fps = now you are into original 6.5 Creedmoor velocity

Creedmoor with 20" barrel = fps - 25fps - 50fps loss per inch = 100 - 200fps loss
2500 - 2600fps

Ammo cost difference:
6.5 PRC 143gr $52 - $70 a box, Brass $1 - $2 a case new
6.5 Creed 143gr $30 - $50 a box, Brass 60 - 70 cents a case new

I got a 6.5 PRC to be lethal to 840 yards which is my practice limit.

I prepped for trip, shot a moose and stuffed it in the very back of the safe.

Too much recoil to shoot for fun.

I'll pull it out again if I'm going up against something moose-sized or bigger.

I shoot 300 win mag and .308 Lazzaroni Warbird and 7 REM Mag…so think this 6.5 PRC with a break will be no issue . Thanks for remarks!
