6.5 prc and elk

On paper the 28 Nosler is a ballistic beast. It's not a hard decision if you're looking for a gun specifically for shooting an elk sized animal at 700 yards.

I just bought the 28 nosler in the Christensen Mesa lipseys distributor special. Gonna get a force rival soon. Not sure what caliber. Either 6.5 prc, another 28 nosler, or 300 prc

Shot placement trumps all. I have no problem taking my 6.5 creedmoor on an elk hunt. I am not a large framed guy and I enjoy shooting and practicing with mine and it is a tack driver. I try to keep shots under 400 yds and if I cant get inside that, I don’t take the shot. On my last Montana hunt I came home with a nice elk and mule deer and the other guy in camp went home with a scope mark scar from his 300 win mag.

My 7mm wildcat has a few chances left to settle in and shoot or it will be becoming a 6.5PRC. Have a long action that will be a 300PRC soon.

What app are you using to determine your KE. I’ve ran a couple number on “Ballistic Advanced edition” and it seems off from a lot of numbers

Any app should give you the same numbers. I run a 156 at 3030fps (6.5 SAUM not PRC, but extremely close). I'm 1450 ft-lb at 1000 yards and close to 1900 at 700 yards. With the 122 at 3350 I'm still over 1200 ft-lb at 1000 yards. Plenty for elk.

plenty for elk if you’re using the right bullet! I’m curious how the thinner jacketed bullets perform at close range (vaporizing) and how they penetrate on less than perfect shots. If I were hunting elk with a 6.5 it would be a monolithic that has good expansion so that as much weight can be retained on impact.
