I got a chance to shoot a small doe last night with a handloaded 156 Berger. Components are CCI 450, Lapua brass, and RL 16. Bullet started at about 2650 and impacted at about 2530.

Deer was hard quartering away. Impact was a couple inches behind the shoulder, and exit was just in front of the offside shoulder, clipping the front of the scapula. Exit was golf ball sized.

She was down and kicking immediately. I don't think she wound up more than 5 feet from impact. Pieces of lung were laying on the ground, and lungs and the top of the heart were shredded.

It's a sample size of one, but I liked what I saw!

As an aside, this was my first chance to use my new Benchmade Steep Country. I was really impressed with the knife!

I have been hoping for on-game performance reports on this 156gr Berger bullet and the 153gr Hornady A-Tip. Looks like the first sample is a good one!

Here’s a little more info for you on the 156’s

Little update on this thread. I shot a bull in CO last week with this load. Shot was 50ish yds in the timber. Impact velocity was 2600ish. The bullet entered right in the crease and exited a few inches back from the crease on the off side. I watched him tip over about 50-60 yds from impact. Caliber size entry, golf ball size exit, nice hole through both lungs, and chest cavity was full of blood. I was very happy with the bullet performance.

I shot him at last light and unfortunately didn't get any wound channel photos, though, as we were pretty busy.

I hadn’t seen this thread until right now. Shot a WT at 525yds about a month ago. Slight 1/4 to. Bullet went in front shoulder and out just behind offside shoulder. Blood, guts, mess everywhere. Stevie Wonder blood trail for about 25 feet to a very dead deer. Upon field dressing, all vitals were vaporized. This was out of a semi custom 6.5 PRC with Unknown Munitions Mayhem line ammo in ADG brass. Very impressed.

Good to hear. I wish I could remember but I don't think I hit a rib at all with my bull. I'm sure if I would have hit some bone it would have been messier. I feel like it's a great bullet.

South Texas brush is thick so I like blood trails to aid in finding critters if/when they leave an opening. I was honestly a little worried but so far, exits and blood trails every time.
