I am flying into Durango this September for a solo elk bowhunt and the area I want to access apparently requires 4wd. I have looked at the regular rental agencies and they want almost twice the cost of my tag for the truck. Any suggestions on any other options? I am coming from FL so driving would take too much of my off time that I want to spend hunting.

Find the closest outfitter permitted in the area you plan to hunt. Their guys are always looking to make a little extra cash. Bet they would be willing to meet you and get you to your drop off location. As an added bonus that will give you someone who knows where you are if you run into any problems.

I think the Jeep rental places in Ouray and Durango are pretty expensive but you might try calling them since it would be a longer term rental and somewhat offseason for them. They might cut you a deal?

My folks just rented a jeep and it ran them $120 for 4 hours so it may be even more expensive than the airport rental. I would rent a car and pay for the extra insurance and just find "reasonable" roads to get to the areas you want to hunt.

The outfitter option might be your best bet, just a days 4wheeler rental around there is around $400, my guess is for a week long rental of a jeep will cost around $1200 and up since they usually give a break for week rentals and off season.

Thanks for all the advice, I spoke with a couple of the car rentals in the area and they say they should have 4wd since its not a busy season for that and they all run around $400-500 for the period I'm looking at. I think I'll go this route so I have the freedom to move if necessary and if I get lucky and tag out early I don't have to hope my phone works to get in touch with someone to pick me up. Good luck this year and thanks again.
