Hi GMO44,
I have a Winchester single shot in 38-55, but I only punch paper and such with it, no hunting. I cast bullets and hand
load the cartridge relatively mildly. I believe, however, it would work very well for whitetails and black bears at reasonable ranges with jacketed hunting bullets and appropriate loads. I believe that back in the day it was a chambering for the Winchester m94. I think it's now also available in the new m94. By reasonable range, I'd say under 150 yards, but that's just my opinion. As a target cartridge it does much better than that, but again, for toppling big steel at long range, a lot of guys will prefer to move up in caliber and bullet weight. I like it for its mild recoil, shootability, economy, and accuracy. It's a great cartridge that I am glad has made a comeback.
