So I’m looking at building up a savage 110 pcs in either of those calibers as a shorter range (sub 150 yard) deer rifle. I do reload already for a ton of stuff however would like the option of using factory ammo for this pistol. Which would I be better off with? Anyone know the velocities of any of the factory loadings in 350 of 400 in the 10.5 barrels? I’ve done a ton of searching and haven’t really found much info, there was one video I found but I would like other input. The 400 I know will thump better but at a bit more recoil which probably won’t be fun with a brace rather than a stock.

To better show the slot im trying to fill, my current hunting rifle lineup is:
336 rebored to 38-55
336 in 35 safari grade
Winchester 53 takedown 25-20
Several 45-70s
Sauer 100 in 6.5 prc

Really looking for a super compact, easy to pack sub 150 yard, light recoiling, strait wall gun for deer and slight possibility of black bear….

Try putting some numbers in a ballistic calculator. Both of those drop pretty fast once they get past 200 yards with a 20 inch barrel. At 10.5 inches you may not even be fast enough for bullet expansion at 150 yards. You may be able to compare 44 magnum velocity from a 10 inch barrel vs the velocity from a rifle barrel to get you in the ballpark of what velocity you may expect. Good luck. Sounds like a handy woods gun if it works out.

Thank you. Yea I tried to ballpark the 350 legend with the one data point I had (one YouTube video that did 350 legend by the inch) and it should carry 1600 at 150yards, but borderline. I was hoping someone had some real world numbers for the 350 and 400 out of a 10.5” barrel so I could plug them in. But so far no luck. Yea my fiancé has a 16” 350 legend as her deer gun and even with that one we are limiting shots to 150 due to the drop.

There are way more factory options in 350 legend.

400 only has 2-3 options
I agree, I would prefer to stick with 350 if it will reach out to 150. Plus I already stock it for my fiancé as she shoots that for deer. I’m hoping someone chimes in with what they actually got for velocity from a short barrel since there isn’t much data. Played around with the ballistics calculator and it will be close with 350. But sticking with 350 gives me more options without having to work up a load.

Here’s another data point for you.

I get 2438fps out of my 12.5” AR in 350 Legend, using Bear Creek Ballistics 140gr gas gun loads.

They also offer loads tailored or bolt guns at a bit higher pressure.

I really like these folks’ loads. Solid copper and designed to expand at the velocity their loads give.

Their bullets are available for reloading, too.

Thank you! I did come across them but wasnt sure how they would run in short barrels. That’s great!

And they expand out of an SBR…

Left is from a deer at, oh, maybe 40 yards. Right also from a deer, but hit a bone and lost one petal.

Awesome thank you for that. That’s the ammo according to my calculations for velocity and energy that should give me the best range, so as long as the gun likes it will be my go to . Still gonna keep it under 100, maybe 150. If ranges will be longer I’ll bring a different gun. I think what I’m gonna do I just buy up a box of as many different ammos as I can find, check the velocity on all of them and then post up a spreadsheet, since it seems like no one is posting velocities out of these short barrels.
