.35 Whelen

This should probably be in the classifieds, but after looking at all the WTB posts regarding .35 Whelen ammo with 0 replies, I thought casting a wider net would help.

Iowa changed regs this year legalizing any cartridge, straight wall or not, between .35 and .500 to be used during youth, disabled, and shotgun seasons. The .35 Whelen was first on the list of examples of legalized rounds. As a result, I sold my .44 mag CVA Scout to my brother and bought a nice looking CVA Scout V2 with 25" barrel and muzzle break in .35 Whelen. Unfortunately, this seems to have been a tad impulsive since I have not been able to find any ammo online in stock. Here is where I'm hoping the Rokslide experts may be able to help me out.

If you have surplus factory .35 Whelen ammo or reload for the round and would be willing to part with 30 or 40 rounds I would appreciate a PM to negotiate terms.

Thank you in advance for your support, and there are 3 weeks before 2nd season shotgun so the situation is somewhat urgent.

Choice Ammunition from Montana had some new hand loaded 35 Whelen ammo in stock a week ago. It is pricey, but as we all know, the ammo market is tough for buyers. They will ship.

We’ve been able to shoot straight walls for the past several years and a lot of guys are already shooting ..450 Bushmasters, 45-70s and .444s. At least now with the .35 I have a legit back up western hunting rifle as well.

After being limited to slugs for decades, guys have appreciated the opportunity to shoot something better.

You are a practical man! ;-). The 35 Whelen mimics the legendary 350 Rigby (225gr @2625) - that's a perfectly suitable western rifle!

35 Whelen is an under-rated cartridge, especially with a good 225gr bullet like a Partition, TBBC or Accubond.......or a 185gr Barnes TTSX......or heck, even a Ballistic Tip of 200gr. I have 3 of them, one of which is an 18.5" barreled Remmy 7600.

Congrats on the rules change. I can't imagine not being able to hunt with a standard rifle cartridge. I doubt the slug rule saved any lives. Almost seems to be a political move. Hmmmm

My thoughts exactly after looking at the ballistics tables. I’m kinda surprised it isn’t more popular, but it was a victim to some challenging circumstances and hype of other cartridges. At this point I have to wonder if there is a round based off the .30-06 case that isn’t near legendary.

I see PA in your profile name and am assuming your from the East. A guy that works for me hunts up in PA and customized 7600s are the king of deer camp. He found one that was a little rough and reasonably priced. His gunsmith buddy shortened the barrel, replaced the wood with all synthetic furniture, and strip/cerakoted all metal finishes. I believe his is chambered in .308.

Remmy did make 18.5" barreled 760 Carbines in the 308.....but they are very rare and coveted so seldom seen for sale..and when they are they are very pricey and sell quickly. Mine is the factory wood and blue, very nice condition but I shortened the barrel from 22" to 18.5" and it handles so sweet. I got a spare factory 35 Whelen clip too.....and almost impossible to find. I have (3) 338-06 rifles as well and are equally under-rated. My prize 35 Whelen is a factory Ruger M77 tang safety older version customized by Mark Bansner with his Hi-Tech Specialties ultralight stock in gray w/ black speckles and all of the metal done in Metalife silver matte brushed finish hard chrome...looks and handles spectacular. It shoots factory Federal 225gr TBBC into tiny little groups. Bucks to Brown Bears, no problemo. Lots to like about the Whelen.

Roger that man, and I believe the original intentions were to increase safety for hunters during drives and to keep long range rounds from punching through the neighbors houses.

However, the ironic contradiction was that you could always use any high power for shooting coyotes.

It’s a fantastic cartridge. When I was growing up in Vermont all the big woods hunters would carry a remington 7600 pump in 30-06 or 35 whelen. I wanted one for years and finally put together a barrel on my t/c platform last year. Been using 225 grain accubonds and 180 grain ttsx and it absolutely flattens animals. With the right set up it’s a capable 400 and under set up. I’m on few waiting lists for ammo but haven’t seen much. If I hear of anything I’ll let you know. Good luck on your search. You’ll really enjoy it. Here’s a big bodied mule buck I took a couple weeks ago. 175 yards in a drainage and just flattened him.

Sounds like a bada$$ rifle! A guy in elk camp in Sep had a rem 7600 in .270.
