338 stock broke

Has anyone seen a wood stock break like this?
A friend from work says he was hunting and looked down to see his stock broken near the tang
It's a 30 year old 338 win, I'm thinking maybe recoil stress..

Yes. A Model 70 action should contact the stock at the recoil lug. All other metal surfaces running the same direction as the recoil lug should have clearance. That one was too tight at the tang. Bummer. There are used ones on eBay a lot of times if your bud wants to go back with factory wood.

I purchased a brand new .308 X-Bolt with a laminate stock from Browning and it broke like that within a year. I filed for a warranty claim and browning denied it. This was before the X bolt hells canyon was released and finding a stock for that model was next to impossible. So i put the gun in the safe for 3 years and ordered one from McMillian when other companies started offering some choices.

I don’t think they’ve even had the 3 position safety for 30 years. My 26yr old 7mm is still tang slide.

It looks like my Ruger M77 Mark II which is the model that they introduced the 3 position safety on. First came out in 1991.

It happens. Front guard screw still torqued? If the guard screw is loose the wood behind the tang will take a lot more recoil abuse than its supposed to. Could also just be from years of the wood swelling and shrinking causing stress around the tang and it finally just gave out.

Its an easy fix. Glass it back together and bed the rifle or could always just get a new stock and bed it. I'd personally lean towards the later but I've had to fix worst looking stocks than that before.

Doubt theirs a stock manufacturer out there that hasnt had a stock split/break. Shit happens, all we can do is our best to minimize the number of things that can go wrong and leave the rest to Murphy.

If he has the missing piece he could fix it. Should be able to find a Ruger MK II used stock pretty easy though. I’d replace it and bed it also.

Agreed, I picked one up not too long ago for $135. They're pretty easy to find.
