Looking at trying the 165 grain accubond out of my 308. Muzzle velocity will be near 2700 FPS due to 20” barrel. I’m wondering if I will get reliable expansion on elk near the 500 yard range?

At 500 yards I will have right at 1500 ft lbs and slightly above 2000 fps. Nosler specs out 1800 FPS min for expansion but after reading many reviews, I’m wondering if the accubond is too tough for long range 308 win hunting.

I can’t find their long range version in stock otherwise I’d try it. I’m curious if the 165 nosler BTs would be a better choice? My experience is that 130grain 270 win BTs come apart at 500 yards on elk but penetrate to the off side and result in a dead elk

Could someone move this thread to the firearm section? I’m thinking that may be a more applicable location being that it is more of a hunting question as opposed to reloading

You would probably be ok with that bullet. Should get good penetration due to not much expansion. I shoot the 200 ab in my 325 and the most of my long range shots have complete pass throughs. They are starting at 2800 fps

It's good out to 1,800 fps. Don't shoot past 1,800 fps minimum.

The long range accubonds are no good at closer ranges, review their site for details.

165 Ballistic Tip?

Nosler Ballistic Tips are for thin skinned game, not elk. Good luck!!

I’ve read on some forums that the 165 and 180 BT 30 cal bullets are tougher than average BTs. Don’t have any proof. Shooting a 165 at 2700 FPS at the muzzle and a 180 at 2525 FPS at the muzzle from a shorter barrel 308 would result in near 1800 FPS at 500-600yards, 1250-1500 ft lbs

FYI. I chronographed 165 grain Accubonds over max load of Varget out of my Finnlight in 308 (20” barrel) and velocities were in the 2550 FPS range.

I'm a lifetime Nosler guy. Billinsd is spot on. Use the right tool for the job and follow the min FPS.

All will kill but not using the recommended pill by the manufacture may or may not result in lost animals, meat loss and poor overall performance.

To me its like using a Philips head screw driver that's not the right size. It will work 80% of the time but eventually the screw face gets worn and it doesn't work. :)

My family took elk at 120 yards this past year and a moose at 187 yards that fell victim to the ABLR. Measured weight retention was as specified by the manufacture and mushroom was good.

The 165 AB will work fine and I second the 168 Ballistic tip would be a great choice also.

Not really motivated to search but this is interesting to read after my experience with factory ABLR for a 7 rem mag last year. I'm sure different calibers will yield different results. 30 yard shot on an okay size male whitetail, hit rib bones going in, through the heart, just under baseball size exit through opposite side rib bones.

I don't know my velocity however I am a few grains below max charge for my 30-06. This was recovered from my elk at 358 yards. 165 grain accubond. I have confidence in the bullet. I know ballistics would be close.

Sometimes people can think too much! I’m usually much more analytical that most, but this is not a question I would waste a nanosecond worth of time on. Go hunting!

I would definitely try to get within 400 with any weight or style bullet at 308 velocities

Factory Nosler 165 grain Accubond ammo is traveling 2550fps out of my 20” barrel. My Dad shot 2 whitetail bucks with it this year with great results. Both were within 100 yards. Both had pass throughs and dropped the bucks in their tracks.
