Anyone currently or has in the past relied on a 308 to take whitetail sized game 300 yards plus? I understand there are more formidable calibers for long range hunting, but what about the 308? I have a Tikka T3 that groups well and I want to stretch it out for 2020.

I’ve taken most animals in AK with my 308. There are better cartridges for this state and I have them, but 308 is still my favorite for up to 500 yds depending on bullet choice obviously.

The Berger ammunition with a 155gr is nothing to scoff at

and 178gr eld-x at 2600fps from Hornady the same.

A lot of recoil tho. Especially for bitty white tails.

But being a legacy cartridge it’s nice having new lapua 308 brass at 80cents a pop and a plethora of bullet weights and choices available in the form of components or loaded ammo.

Depends on your definition of plus. 1-300 ish I’d say the 308 is in the category labeled “ideal” for whitetail. I use it for everything. Ive got 110 - 180gr loads on hand. I’ve been known to say that if I can’t kill it with a 308 I don’t want to hunt it. Brown bear might be the some day exception. But I’ll probably do that with a bow...
