My son turns 11 this year. Looking for a nice 308 deer rifle for him. He loves wood stocks but that’s not a must. Prefer 22” barrel length.

Anything out there before I order a new tikka?

Tikka is a great choice. The action is top notch, and if he doesn’t like the OEM stock, you can get a KRG Bravo for around $500 or other more expensive models. If he’s bound and determined for wood, you could get a Boyd’s laminate for around $300 or less.

I have a LH Ruger American .308 in a Chestnut colored Boyd’s Prairie Hunter I may be willing to sell. It’s been on 2 hunts and is in good condition. I’ve put around 300-400 rounds down range and killed one nice elk with it.

11 yr olds come in all sizes. If he's small, I don't think you can beat a Browning x-bolt micro midas. Stock spacers can make it grow with him.
I've had a dozen kids and a few ladies kill deer with a micro midas 7mm-08.
It has a factory wood stock.

Man that’s beautiful. Wish the barrel was at least 20” I’d be all over it. Those m77 are built like tanks

Savage LW Storm model 110. 20” barrel and shims to add to the stock as he grows.

Browning X-Bolt micro as stated above is another excellent option. Browning has 2 micro’s. Wood and composite stocks. The composite one has a factory muzzle break that will help with the recoil. That might help if he’s a little recoil shy.

I have a Winchester model 70 Lightweight Compact w/ a 20" barrel in 308. Blue and wood. It has the factory shorter LOP stock, I think 13-1/4" built specifically for children or ladies. Its also a CRF action. A very nice light rifle and not many were built and it's new. Your son would be quite happy with it. PM if interested.

If you are dead set on a 308 this one can be re-barreled cheap enough. I don’t have any affiliation with the seller but it’s a screaming deal.

Good Morning, not sure if you are dead set on on a 308win, but I have two rifles that would be a great low recoil idea for your son.

1. First rifle is a
Remington 700, 20” barrel (1-7twist), chambered in 22 Creedmoor. Has about 200rds shot through it, my load was mild shooting 88gr ELD-M’s at 3150fps. It hammers and no recoil

2. Second rifle is a
Howa 1500, 18” barrel (1-9twist), 243 Ackley Improved. Great rifle also, very low recoil and you can shoot any 6mm bullet from 58’s up to 105’s. It has about 200rds through it, my load was shooting 105’s at 2900fps

If you are interested in either setup, or any part of the rifle let me know. I’m open to parting them out. Hope you find a great rifle for your son👍🏻

OP, you might also think about an AR platform. They are now readily available around $1K in .308. The cool thing about an AR is the stock adjusts for the child and they can grow with it. I have a friend that is raising his kids deer hunting with AR's exclusively. The kids like the platform (cool factor) and it meets the need for fit/adjustability. For what it's worth.

This will be a rifle that he will be hunting solo with. Want to stick with a bolt gun. Little less variables for things to go wrong. A deer rifle he can keep forever.
He shot his first deer with a 6.5 grendel on AR platform. Love AR’s too!

Great price, but that's a long length of pull for an 11 yr old at 14 inches. I ran across a similar deal, shouldered the rifle, and sat it back down. I don't use any rifles with a lop over 13.75 inches and I'm 55 yrs old. Actually prefer around 13.5- 13.6 inches.
Maybe you can order the Boyd's shorter and he can grow into the factory stock.
