308 168 ELD-Ms on Game

I’ve had great luck with the 140 and 147 grain ELD-MS on deer. Anyone got experience with the 168 grain ELD-M on deer sized game? I have a great load worked up for my 308.

ELD-M bullets simply kill critters. I have no experience with the 168gr 30 cal but 162gr .284 kill deer and elk DEAD.

The Amax version did good on hogs for many years before it became the ELDM. I'm told the only difference is the tips. Supposedly the old tips melted in flight? Yeah, I found those little red tips a few times in my autopsies. I think Hornady just needed new marketing...

Has anyone shot a lot of the 308 Win Hornady Black 168 A-MAX and the Match 168 ELD-M factory loads? If so, what was the precision like between the two? As far as I know, the A-MAX and the ELD-M exhibit pretty similar terminal performance. The A-MAX load is readily available, relatively cheap...

What is "the" 308 win load?

46.5 gr of Varget and various 150/155's have been great for me in multiple .308's. The 46.5 gr and 150 Ballistic Tip has shot under MOA in every .308 I've shot it through.

I had pictures on my phone of the mess it made of a doe I shot last year with factory hornady match superformance match ammo. It was around 40 yards but it put a nice sized hole where it exited.

I used 225 grain eldms in my 300 win mag on 3 mule deer and one bull elk last year. All 1 shot kills. I was really impressed with bullet overall. 2800 fps at the muzzle.

I'm sure the 168s would work well out of a 308. The only complaints with the lethality of these bullets that I've heard have been when they are pushed 3000+ fps. It seems like they tend to "grenade" if the impact velocity is crazy high.

Shot 5 deer this year with the 168 eldm in a 308 from 50-430 yards. All one shot, bang flop kills.

I use them exclusively in my 308. Have killed a dozen or more white tails with it. They work great.

Agree, I feel like Hornady are like some big pharma, spend more money on marketing than R&D. To answer the original question, I've a few deer with 168ELD-M and works well but your load velocity seems to be 2328fps? Seems slow?

That is the supposed velocity at the target at 100 yards but often not accurate. Magnetospeed 2596 at muzzle.

100%..."melting tips" are a non factor and when Hornady came out with their claim of their tip being the hardest to melt there were already tipped bullets with Higher melting points. Hornady markets very well and somehow guys don't see they are just cup and core bullets...the same that have been around for decades.
