Hey fellas. I know I’m over thinking this but I’m looking for a new hunting stick. My “long range” is probably a chip shot for most of you. I keep my shots under 500 yards just because that’s what I’m comfortable with. Ideally it would be within 300 yards.

With that said I want a new toy. I have a 300 win but it’s a heavy target rifle so I don’t carry it in the field. My hunting rifles are 308 or 270. I want a little more horse power so I was going towards a lighter weight 300 but everyone talks about the 7 PRC being the new “do it all” cartridge. I’m old school so if it ain’t broke why fix it (300 win mentality) but I do like a new shiny toy (7prc mentality).

I’m looking at an Alamo Precision Rifle and just don’t know which cartridge. I hunt hogs, mule deer and elk so I know either round will be fine for my needs

For the ranges you described, and of the options you listed, 7 prc hands down.

Though that would not be a contender for me personally. If you were open to other suggestions im sure many here are willing to throw them your way. If not, get the 7.

Yeah there are a lot more options out there for sure. The other thing I failed to mention in my original post is I don’t reload so I’m shooting factory ammo. That’s why I’m still considering the 300. It’s available everywhere if I need it and I have probably 500+ rounds in the cabinet already. But I can’t help myself thinking a new caliber is just another notch on my belt

All 4 of the cartridges mentioned are more than adequate for your intended range.

Since you want to buy a new toy and have listed two cartridge options it would come down to this for me. If you reload and are invested in the 300 win mag, I’d recommend another 300 win mag. If you have no investment of ammo or reloading components (brass, bullets, dies, etc.) in the 300 win mag, I’d recommend the 7 PRC.

PS - huge .300 Winny fan

Love my Tikka 300 mag but the last few years I have taken the 7PRC elk hunting. Only thing is the 7PRC seems to really benefit if you reload over factory ammo.

Thanks fellas. I want to reload and started collecting some equipment but I just don’t have the time. Maybe in 5-6 years when the kids are off to college I will

I believe you can’t go wrong with either choice of cartridge. It really comes down to what you prefer. Plenty of factory ammo choices for what you want to do.
I know that Alamo Precision Rifles is an excellent choice for your build. I have several of their full on custom rifles and I love them all. Simply outstanding!

I picked up my 300wm during covid and had the same dilemma. Came down to ammo availability at that point. I do reload, but couldn't even find cases for any of the PRC's. Actually even 300wm was kind of scarce at that point, but I was able to scrounge some together. I like the wm, but would be nice to not have a banded case.

You say your 300wm is a "heavy target rifle", is it a factory rifle or custom? If the action is worth building on you can get a new barrel with a lighter contour and lighter stock for less money than the Alamo precision.

My 300 “target rifle” started its life as a good old fashion REM 700. I had it mounted in a new McMillan stock and have a heavy bull barrel. I thought about having a different barrel put on but what’s better than a new gun. The stock isn’t the lightest either and the glass is pretty heavy too considering I’m looking for something to haul up and down the mountains. I haven’t weighed the rifle but I would say it’s probably 14-15 pounds all in. A new APR rifle should be around 9 1/2 pounds or maybe a little less with glass and a full magazine

Run the ballistics with your pill. Whichever bucks wind the best I would be most interested in. Drop is easy to adjust for. Wind is harder to judge in the field. .284 caliber bucks wind better.

2 have 2 30 cal and one 6.5 PRC. BUT...I have an affinity for the 280 AI. Bucks wind really well.
Only 100 fps less than a 7 mm RM. Less recoil. I don't have one yet.....

There’s so little taper to the PRC case it’s less than just about any other cartridge out there, which is why a lot of guys get clickers regularly. Go ahead, look up a straighter bottle neck cartridge - I bet you can’t find one. Straighter than the WSM, RUM, SAUM, Ruger, Sako, creedmoor, and Nosler cartridges.

I’d get the time tested 7 Rem mag and not have to rely on hoping and crossing fingers clickers will be an issue. To 500 yards there’s no advantage to the PRC ballistics that makes a difference except on paper. I’d be surprised if the PRC is still popular in a decade.

Personally I’d suppress that 270 or 308 first, that’d most likely change your future perspectives / desires.

I would buy this and call it a day.
