Hey fellas. I know I’m over thinking this but I’m looking for a new hunting stick. My “long range” is probably a chip shot for most of you. I keep my shots under 500 yards just because that’s what I’m comfortable with. Ideally it would be within 300 yards.

With that said I want a new toy. I have a 300 win but it’s a heavy target rifle so I don’t carry it in the field. My hunting rifles are 308 or 270. I want a little more horse power so I was going towards a lighter weight 300 but everyone talks about the 7 PRC being the new “do it all” cartridge. I’m old school so if it ain’t broke why fix it (300 win mentality) but I do like a new shiny toy (7prc mentality).

I’m looking at an Alamo Precision Rifle and just don’t know which cartridge. I hunt hogs, mule deer and elk so I know either round will be fine for my needs

For the ranges you described, and of the options you listed, 7 prc hands down.

Though that would not be a contender for me personally. If you were open to other suggestions im sure many here are willing to throw them your way. If not, get the 7.

Yeah there are a lot more options out there for sure. The other thing I failed to mention in my original post is I don’t reload so I’m shooting factory ammo. That’s why I’m still considering the 300. It’s available everywhere if I need it and I have probably 500+ rounds in the cabinet already. But I can’t help myself thinking a new caliber is just another notch on my belt

All 4 of the cartridges mentioned are more than adequate for your intended range.

Since you want to buy a new toy and have listed two cartridge options it would come down to this for me. If you reload and are invested in the 300 win mag, I’d recommend another 300 win mag. If you have no investment of ammo or reloading components (brass, bullets, dies, etc.) in the 300 win mag, I’d recommend the 7 PRC.

PS - huge .300 Winny fan

Love my Tikka 300 mag but the last few years I have taken the 7PRC elk hunting. Only thing is the 7PRC seems to really benefit if you reload over factory ammo.
