300win mag vs 300wsm build

So I have been kicking around some ideas and been looking on here at old threads and just can’t come up with an answer so thought I would get some opinions. I have a few custom guns guns, all smaller calibers, and I do have a tikka 270wsm and a ca Mesa 300win mag. I have really started to appreciate guns that are set up more for you than factory guns. I am going to sell my ca Mesa and would like to build in either a win or wsm. At first I settled on the win but the more I look, there really is not much ballistic advantage to either. Either way I go I would like to shoot the Berger 215. Anyone have good luck with that bullet in a 300wsm and what velocities are you seeing? One advantage to me going with the wsm is the weight savings and possibly sending my tikka to hca to have a carbon killer made out of it for a reasonable price. He has built one rifle for me and did a great job. Would like to keep the weight of rifle and scope close to 10lbs and going 300win that may involve a titanium action which will start getting pretty pricey. I have not got to handle a ag composite stock either so not sure how that stock is. Any input would be great.

Can’t help, but following as I am struggling to decide this same thing. I’d like the short action but wonder if I’d be happier with the wm as I don’t reload currently.

You should not need to use titanium or really any exotic material at all to achieve a sub 10lb 300wsm/wm.

My semi-custom MRC1999 in 300WSM shoots decent with Berger 215 and IMR-7828SC doing 2850fps, its a 10 twist. It's not throated for 215 Bergers so I'm using up a bit of powder capacity by seating deeper.

My full custom Kelbly Atlas 300WM shoots the Berger 210 well with RL-22 doing 2950fps. It shot the 215 ok but I chickened out because its an 11 twist. Could maybe run a bit faster but I've got good dope so why push it.

There's not much performance difference in either caliber, so it'll come down to ammo availability and what action, stock, magazine and barrel you want to go with. My 300WSM is actually heavier than my 300WM.

There are plenty of custom ammo builders so you dont have to be limited to true factory ammo if you dont reload.

Probabably not enough difference to matter if you throat either cartridge for the 215 and have the magazine length.

I am just getting into reloading so factory availability isn’t a must, but I don’t really like to build on something that in a pinch I cannot find some somewhere. Is the wsm around to stay? Also anyone have any first hand experience with a carbon killer from hca? Seems like a pretty decent deal. Send my tikka in and $2500 and I believe he could set it up for the 215

If you’re planning to shoot the 215 you will get better velocity out of the win mag. They’re pretty close with the lighter bullets but the heavier you get, the more the win mag shines. Just don’t build a win mag on the tikka action because you will be limited on OAL. Build on the Mesa or sell them both and start from scratch

That’s kind of what I was wondering. You hear a lot of the 215 and the wm but not a ton with the wsm.

I'm shooting a custom 300 WSM built on a Tikka action with an HCA barrel (older barrel with a Rock Creek blank).

@Unknown Munitions did the load work and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Matt Whaley built the rifle for me.

Tikka Action with aftermarket long action magazine.
1/10 twist, 24" barrel
300 WSM chambered for the 215 Berger
Muzzle velocity is 2945 fps
Norma Brass
Federal mag primer
Reloader 26 powder

That’s pretty good velocity. What stock did you run on it and what is your total weight out of curiosity?

It's a Mcmillan Gamescout. Can't remember the weight off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure it's about 9 lbs with the 5-20x56 SHV.

And, I'll add the picture of my buck from this year just because!

For comparison, I have a RBros 300 win mag custom. 28" Broughton that pumps out the 215 hybrids at 2985 over a reasonable charge of H1000. I could push the H1000 a little more or I have a solid supply of RL26 that I want to mess with but I just can't bring myself to do it since the load I have is simply excellent.

The above posts show some pretty impressive results from that WSM!

All, what's the case capacity of that 300WSM cartridge? I'm just curious how much more powder I am burning for my minimal velocity gain. Again, at a velocity that I am more than content with.

I would imagine that the longer barrel is probably part of the velocity gains?

I’m using 68.6 of RL26, ran up to 70 still no pressure.

AG composites are excellent stocks.

Go wsm on the Tikka. If you go long action, then do the 300 prc on the Mesa or another action.

I run a 7SS in the AG composite adjustable hunter. It is a touch over 10 pounds everything with empty mag included.

Just something to consider on your build. Not sure what you’re full build list will end up looking like. I just wrapped up a 7mm WSM build after selling my 300 WSM. The 300 is an awesome cartridge, I liked the weight to BC options in the 7mm range. Either way, just keep an eye on the mag box length for the rifle you choose. The specs on a standard rem 700 SA mag box is around 2.865”. If you run a longer high BC bullet in the 300 WSM you are going to run into space issues. Other actions and mags are different, just something to be aware of. All that said, my 300 WSM pushed 180gr Accubonds at 2950. It hit hard. Good luck.

$2500 is steep for you supplying the rifle..
If youre going with a build id sell the two you have and pick up a Defiance anTi LA for $1100.
You could get a prefit proof barrel chambered in 300 prc for $825, it'd be set up perfectly for 215's and with Lapua brass coming out its gonna be hard to beat.
Pick up a CF stock of your choice, bdl bottom metal and magazine, a Trigger tech or Timney trigger, and you'll be set up for around $2700 with a full custom that weighs around 6.5 lbs

I have debated going this way also, except I would stay with the 300win mag. I have put together a few others this way and I like them. I have those in chassis though, so it would be another 300-500 to have the stock bedded.

My 7ss shoots .5 moa and better without bedding in an AG composite stock, I've shot some .2 groups. It comes with pillars from the factory. My buddy built two off AG composites and they shoot .5 and better without bedding. Also, $300 seems really steep.
