300 WSM replacement

I have a 300 wsm and I have a bunch of relevant powder, bullets, and primers. Brass is a problem. I'm tired of searching high and low for brass. Even if I find some, the next time will be the same thing. So I'm thinking to hell with it, I'll get a new elk rifle. I want a short 20-22" barrel because I'm getting a suppressor. I'm not really into .308s. What would you recommend as a replacement, that is a little easier to get components for?

6.5prc would seem neat or a 7prc. They shoot great factory loads so then you get brass… 7saum would be first choice after 300wsm but same boat on brass

Well, I'm looking to use my 30 cal reloading inventory so I'm looking for another 30 cal. I should say max range 450 yards as well.

I hunted for years with a 30-06. How do you like the 06 in a 20" barrel? Do you prefer the .308 to that?

Doesn’t sound like that would be a bad idea either.
I prefer .308 to the 30.06 but I also grew up with .308 so I’m probably a bit biased. My .308 is cut at 18” and I use a suppressor. I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

I don’t think any animal is going to be able to tell the difference at 400 to 500 yards between us .308 or 30.06.

I'd say 280ai. If you have to have 30cal, 300wm, 300prc, or maybe a 30-06? All depends on what you need it for I guess.

It pretty much defeats your design intent if you go from one rare thing to another rare or emerging thing that may or may not be around in 10 years.

If you look at cost of components, performance a 30-06 is right in the middle of the road for what you just described. I have deer hunters give me 30-06 brass a couple of times a year. And I don't even have one. You'll be right there in the ballpark with a 270 and a 280 AI but once again those components are a little harder to get if you compare to '06

No matter what kind of hunting you do, there's probably one cartridge that does that job like seven and a half percent better. But on the other hand anyone that disparages one of these three cartridges is probably off in the weeds just a little bit.

I actually have 100 rds for my current rifle. Was going to get a new 300 wsm and wanted to start with fresh brass is what got me looking. Then the diffculty finding got me thinking I should just get a less exotic caliber.

I went through this last year. I ended up selling my 300 wsm and picked up a Seekins Element in 6.5 PRC. I wanted to ditch some weight and run a suppressor. PRC ammo and components are easy to find.

Ditch the 300 wsm, I loved mine, but I could not find any good brass so I sold it and got a 300 WM, Lapua and Peterson brass available, and you’ll get plenty of performance out of a 22 inches shooting Berger 215s, just my opinion.

Put in notifications or backorders for the next run of ADG, buy 3-4 boxes and you will have enough to wear a new barrel out.

My immediate thought was the .30-06 will use any of your .30 cal bullets and brass can be sourced for almost nothing and odds are you can find used dies for a song as well. Of course the same applies to the .308 but I for reasons that only exist in my head I prefer the '06 as a hunting round.

How many rounds are you planning to shoot a year?
300wsm ammo isn't that hard to find.
It's hard to beat on the longish range gumption to reasonable barrel length spectrum.

Put in orders that your able to back order. Put out WTB ads for 300 wsm brass. I've also used 270 wsm brass before when I only had 1 wsm being a 300 wsm. I didn't worry about headstamp then. Collect enough brass that you have enough to not have to worry about it and never look back.

I own a 300 wsm currently and don't shoot it much but believe I can kill any and everything I'd ever want to kill. If I had to have 1 big game rifle it would be that one. But that's just my opinion.

It doesn't take much brass to keep a 300 wsm fed for the life of a barrel. Only gotta find it once.

Inside 450 a 308 or 30-06 should work just fine but may not be ideal depending on which powders and bullets you're looking to utilize.

I've been using 325 WSM brass resized. Actually been able to find that quite easily when I've looked. Nobody seems to shoot it.
