A buddy and I were chewing the fat in the machine shop and somehow we started talking about the inexpensive Savage Axis rifles. After a few beers and debate he basically challenged me to build one in a magnum. So I did, here is the Savage Axis 300WSM, as far as I know the only one in existence.
Action: Savage Axis .308 Donor
Barrel: Green Mountain Blank 1:10 turned on my lathe, chambered, and threaded
Stock: Boyds
Shooting Federal 168 Tactical Tip Bonded with 6.5 Staball Powder
Target is the first range trip
It was a fun project and turned out to be a very accurate rifle. I fully blueprinted the action and lapped it all in, did a nice 2lbs trigger job, you would NEVER know it started life as an Axis.
