I got a 300 Win Mag that groups around 1" at 100. When I shot out to 300 at a 2' x 2' metal gong. I cannot successfully hit it consistently. It's a 180gr bullet sighted in 1.5" high at 100. I have a 30-06 and I hit the plate every time. Could the barrel be worn out?

A 1” group gun would shoot a 3” circle at that distance. Should easily consistently hit a 24” gong. I would venture to say you aren’t used to the setup. Do you have a scope on there you can crank up the power? Maybe you are flinching? Shouldn’t be the gun if it’s consistent 1 moa at 100.

Theoretically it should hit at a 3" group out to 300.

Two shooters? Same issue. :) If the barrel is worn out would it be more inconsistent down range?

It is rare that a rifle shoots well at 100, but not farther. Generally, it takes about 800 rounds to start to wear a .300 barrel out. By start, I mean it goes from .75" to 1", then 300 rounds later it shoots a little bigger than 1". After 1500 or so, it might be at 2" or it may not get worse than 1-1.5". They don't just go from good to bad. It's a gradual process as the throat wears.

I would suspect parallax and head position relative to your scope. Have you shot it at paper at 200, then at 300?
