novice reloader here. Does anyone have a recipe for a 300 win mag they would recommend. I have a tikka that shoots factory barnes vortex ttsx 180s well at 100, though I am not happy with SD and ES

Thinking 180ish gr hammers
h1000
lapua brass

Thanks!

I used to shoot 77 grains of h1000, Fed 215, Petersons long brass, with a 212 eldx. That was going at 2975 fps out of a 26inch Seekins ph2. Spreads were in the teens and it worked well out to 1200 yards.

I'd just load your own 180 ttsx loads if your rifle already shoots those well.
Barnes doesn't have the preferred load on the data sheet that is on there now, but the older one from 2017 had Magnum as the best shooting powder for the 180 ttsx in the 300WM.

Thanks. Though it shoots well on paper I am moving away from them as I am not happy with the performance on game (same results with 120 ttsx in my 6.5). Likely going to hammers

180-200 Accubond with Ramshot Magnum or H1000 is my go to in the 300WM, I’ve been experimenting with Ramshot Grand lately with great results.

I've dropped down in bullet weight with the Barnes in my 300 Win and have been happy. What is the performance part that hasn't been what you want? What Hammer are you considering?

While you are at it, take a look at the 168 TTSX. Barnes lists a 1500 fps expansion velocity (as is the 175 LRX). All else equal, the 168 TTSX would fly a bit flatter given Barnes data velocities.

Let us know what about the performance of the 180 TTSX that wasn't up to expectation and what Hammer you are considering.

Yep the 168 would be a good choice also!

I’ve never seen an animal shot with a ttsx bullet go very far.

As well. I am curious when folks go away from monos because they weren't happy with performance. Many times it's one experience. Typically, the animal is dead and has been examined when folks say they weren't happy. It's an old adage.... "At what point in the animals death did the bullet fail".

In the same vein, I went away from frangible bullets after a few experiences of ruining meat back in the early 90's, as Barnes was coming on the scene with a bullet that by all counts was revolutionary in many respects. An ugly mess and wasting a resource that I am trying to put on the table doesn't make sense.
