300 win mag non lead

my buddy has all the components to reload my 300wm. I butchered an elk for him while he was in quarantine so he said He’d hook me up with the first batch on him, I just need to provide the bullets. I’ll be using once fired federal nickel plated brass.

I have 3 small kids in the house and want to move to a non-lead bullet. I’m shooting a tikka t3 super light 300wm. He’s shooting a 300wsm tikka t3 and would like to get a bullet he can shoot as well, so I believe I need to keep an eye on the overall length?

I’m currently shooting federal 180gr trophy bonded.

Here’s where I get lost. Do I go with a 180gr ttsx? Or do I try a hammer and if so, which one?


My bull tags get sucked up with archery gear so most of my rifle hunting is cow elk, mule deer and antelope. I’m not shooting past 600 and rarely past 400-450.

I like the idea of a slightly lighter bullet, hopefully something that won’t do as much damage as the 180 trophy bonded? My antelope had a bowling ball size hole on the exit.

Any ideas are greatly appreciAted!

I prefer cutting edge bullets for lead free. But they're spendy. I've had good luck with them. Barnes is good because they're pretty easy to find too. If I had to pick between ttsx or hammer, I'd go with the ttsx.

I’m open to anything, but I have enough hobbies. The plan is to find a load my gun likes and hunt. I don’t need another obsession. Haha

Your gun is a 1-11" twist, so just make sure that the copper bullet you choose is stable for for that.

I love hammer bullets because of their design I can really push the envelope and get the most out of them. I shoot the 181 out of my WM (1-10" twist).

However, that doesn't sound like that is your cup of tea, so I would highly recommend the 175 LRX (basically same price as the 180 TTSX but you get lower expansion velocity and higher BC). I've personally seen them take down 7 elk out of a 300 WSM.

OP do not do this one. I know that if you called Steve Davis (owner of hammer bullets) he would not even recommend this particular one for you. Someone is trolling for their first comment.

I am not trolling for my first comment. Never trolled never will. Stick this bullet under 75 gr of rl 22 and I guarantee you accuracy and decent velocity without any undo pressure.
Notice I did not bring up the fact that he can get 300 RUM velocity by overloading it (compared to conventional--for a lack of better words--- bullets).

Just load it with standard loads and you will be fine. When you gain experience and fully know what you're doing you can reach for the "velocity" stars.

His rifle is 1-11" twist and that bullet is designed for 1-10" twist. Why recommend a bullet that his gun won't stabilize?

168 TTSX is the easy, on the shelf answer with plenty of data available.

The Cutting edge 165 Lazer will get you a bit more performance.

Those absolute hammers look like a cool concept but I'd want some tinkering time with them to make sure i got it figured out. I wouldn't try them for a one and done load without prior experience or time to develop a load.

I shot a bull and a buck this year with a 175 LRX out of my 300WM. Pretty impressed with the results.

Shot the bull straight on in the chest at 400, he turned, and I followed up with one in the neck (cow was blocking his front shoulder, etc). He dropped at the neck shot, which blew through the spine and made a big exit. First shot went through his lungs and penetrated a good ways into his guts (made a half-hearted attempt to recover it, but gave up on digging through that mess).

Shot a large bodied mule deer at 290, quartering away. Bullet entered 2 ribs behind the front shoulder, exited through the off side. Big hole going through the ribs on entry, big hole through the scapula going out. Buck walked about 15 steps and tipped over.

My bullets are seated out very long at 3.78 COAL or so (rifle is throated for heavy Bergers). With 75.5 grains of H1000 I'm getting 3195fps out of a 28" barrel.

I’ve tried the Barnes and also the hammers in a few different .30 cals.

the hammers are much, much easier to find a good load for. All of them I’ve tried have been so friggin easy to get an accurate load it’s not even funny.

terminal performance I have no complaints with either but I really like the few kills I’ve seen with hammers. Seems like they dump more energy compared to Barnes. More bang flops vs Barnes seem to zip through the chest cavity and they do a death run.

id go with the standard hammer hunters, 166gr (?) if anything for the ease of loading and the ease of acquiring bullets. Steve at Hammer is an awesome dude, I’ve talked to him multiple times on the phone with load questions and he’s been great. Supply has never been an issue for me with hammers...can’t say the same about Barnes.

69.3gr. IMR 4350. 3.34". Group is 0.422 center to center. Don't think I ever chronographed it. But shows right at 3000fps according to Barnes data. This is their max load.
