I am in the process of researching a new rifle in .300 win mag. In my previous post a comment was posted about magazine length and how it may limit my case overall length. I talked to several of the manufacturers and found most had a mag length of 3.4 inches. One I talked to had 3.7 inches.

I do reload, but never for the .300 win. Can any of the reloaders with .300 win mag experience provide me with thoughts on the overall length and if I need to be concerned about the mag length? Planning to shoot 180 grain, but wouldn't mind experimenting with 215's.

It's all going to depend on how the rifle is throated and what style of bullet you want to shoot. I would make sure it has a sufficient twist rate as well if you want to shoot some 215's

I just measured my 300WM loads for a Cooper and they came in at 3.61" COAL. These are with the Berger 215s.

I’ve got a Tikka T3 that is limited to the 3.340 because of the magazine. It’ll put 180 gr Accubonds under a 1/2” all day long. I haven’t quite had the same success with the Barnes 215’s yet. I honestly need to work on load development more before I blame the COAL as the issue.

like others said, it depends on the chamber throat. A 215 Berger seated with bearing surface starting above the neck/shoulder junction will result in a coal greater than 3.7" if I recall correctly.

Mine is 3.740 and is the longest I feel like I would want to go. In my rifle it puts me .040 off the lands.

With a few exception, I found that most manufacturers are sticking to the SAAMI length of 3.34 or 3.4 length for magazine. (CA and Fierce are 3.7). For those of you who are running longer OAL, like 3.7, are you loading them single shot or is there a magazine conversion that allows for the longer length?

The OAL for a 300 Win with a 215 boat tail junction seat at the neck/shoulder junction is right at 3.7". It will fit in a standard Remington 700 mag box. I know this comment always ruffles feathers but I can not see the point of shooting 180s in a 300. Shoot the 215. If you want 180s shoot a 7mm.
