Looking at building a new 30 cal light weight hunting rifle. I plan to use a defiance anti x action with a Bix'n-Andy trigger, Bartlein cabon barrel , and an ag composite stock the only issue im having is trying to decide on a caliber if the slight gain of going to Rum is worth the extra or if the 30 nosler is plenty. The rifle will be used in hunting elk moos deer caribu and bear

There are some great threads on +P and Absolute Hammers where RUM performance is had by the smaller cartridges. I haven’t been following brass availability but I would imagine benefit goes to the 30 Nosler. I‘ve got a 26” barreled 30 Nosler and Ryan Avery’s thread “30 Nosler +P” thread really has me rethinking future rifles.

I own both. Apples to apples the RUM wins every time. Just look at the difference in case capacity. Chances are the 30 Nosler will do everything you need it to though. Set it up for the 215 Bergers and as some have said...plus P the throat and you'd be easily over 3100fps out of 26" without leaning on it.

Great article thanks for the suggestion now going to look into this more

both good rounds.the critters wont tell the difference.i have custom 300 dakota and 300 win.older now and shoot the win mag more often now.with todays bullets its plenty.

I've owned nine 300 RUMs and two 30 Noslers. There is no point in building a RUM and short stroking it. Get an action that can run a 4" box and run nothing smaller than 215s. Personally, I have moved to a 30 Nosler because it can do anything I need it to do for 0 to 1200ish yards with less powder, less weight, and less recoil. They can be throated right and still fit in a standard mag box.

Rum: 112gr, 30N: 100gr. In reality there may be 100-125 fps between them. Pick one, pick your bullet, set the rifle up around it, and see what it does, try be happy with the results. I like the 300 norma improved with its 107gr capacity. 300 norma sucks in standard form, especially with anything but lapua or adg brass, once improved the case really comes to life. I've gotten excellent speeds from my norma, which are on par with the Rum optimized on a long action. I think to hunting distances, a 300wm 300prc 30nos are more than capable of doing what the norma or rum are. I juts like lapua brass. I do have a 30 nosler though, running adg. Now that lapua brass is coming for 300prc, honestly I'd go that route with a +p throat.

If your going to jump to that bolt face you might as well go 300 Lapua Ai or 300 Terminator.

I just went though all this analysis and ended up with a .300 prc. Made the most sense for a .30 cal LR gun, all things considered.
