300 RUM Lets hear it

When comparing velocities it gets confusing because of this or that. SAAMI pressure barrels and measured velocities are more uniform than uncle Todd’s handloads in a mega magnum compared with someone else’s factory loads in a Proffit Reeping Cartridge in a completely different brand of rifle. Pressure barrels are closer to match barrels than typical cheap factory production tubes, but for better or worse it’s nice seeing professionally tested loads in multiple cartridges. Here’s the SAAMI pressure data for a few big 300 mags and it matches what I’d expect: 200 gr 300 PRC is about 2,800 fps, 300 Wby 2,900 fps, and 300 Rum about 3,000 fps.

Length is more important than weight - as the long bullets, that have good BCs, take up a lot of room in those cases.

Try a long (lrx, ablr, eldm, eldx) bullet for a normal throat length, like the OP would use :)

I personally dont have a use for a rifle that CAN NOT shoot factory ammo, even if i reload. Why have a 300 rum or nosler - with a throat that makes any load, except handload, worthless? I dont like the idea of not being a plane ride or several hour drive away from taking a few hours to make a few boxes of ammo and buying more. Beyond that - you dont actually have reloading data when you are doing that with the C.O.A.L being much different.

Unknown munitions, copper creek, and a few other custom load makers show 300 prc speed as superior/even at worst with anything over 200 grains. 250 grains (what id want to shoot really long range) its not even close.

As far as ridiculous prices - thats what i imagine the struggle for brass will be like when the 30 nosler dies off from lack of support and interest and 30 nosler/rum isnt offered in many riflles. Factory ammo in the RUM and Nosler will be a fortune.
🤨
My Nosler is SAAMI spec, no long throat. Shoots factory ammo fine. Like I said, I had a 300prc. It was lackluster for the extra action length needed. I bought enough 30N brass to last through my barrels life expectancy.

If I were stuck with factory ammo only, I wouldn’t look at the Nosler. I would get a 300wm.

Here is a quick read if you care, from the other side of rokslide.

After looking more closely at the original post, nothing I suggested transfers to a stubby 19” barrel. Lol

Love my Rum, I shot under rifled for years. 25-06, 308. and a 270 I learned to track wounded game especially when ethical distance shots were marginal. A lot happens when you're trying to take an animal's life. Once I start hunting with a .300 no more tracking, just picking up game right where I shot it. If it was a heart shot great a lessor cartridge would have been fine but a marginal shot and the Rum shines. Still right there.....

300 rum is a kitten with side baffle brake and a little more feisty than a kitten but still a kitten with a 9” can spun on. I like it enough i may never sway away for my high country needs. Bat vesper build in the making for my second 300 rum. Hand loads and regular practice allow it to be extremely accurate and is fun to shoot. I still get that smile on target at distance. Lucky enough to have locations to send em in various mountain terrain validating, confirmation confidence for time with tags in hand. Good luck

When the RUM's first came out I was excited about them. But I don't shoot Remington I didn't bother with them. About a year after release Davidson ran a special run of Winchester Mod70 in 300 RUM. I ordered one and used it for many years. Killed several elk with it. The only problem I had was it took a LOT of concentration when you pulled the trigger because when the dust settled you had to remember what state you were in so you could walk back and get your stuff. I loaded to the max, so when you touched that baby off it set you back about 4 ft. After hunting with that rifle for about 10 years I got to the point I could not even target practice with it because my shoulder would be sore for a week afterward. So it resides in my gunsafe now as a fond memory of my youthful days of hunting, now I carry a Winchester 270 short and it kills all the same stuff that 300 did with 1/4 the powder, less muzzle blast, and my shoulder thanks me.

Should shoot with at minimum a side baffle brake like a ti pro 5. The recoil is less than a .308 win. When my boy was 12 he could easily touch off rounds with a smile.

Was given this big bitch a while ago. Just a 700sendero with a Terminator T3 screwed on. I hated the stock so it got the KRG treatment.

With the brake, it recoils about what my tikka 243 does. However the blast from it is exhausting.

Brass is expensive and doesnt last long. Bullets are expensive and omg does it burn some powder.

Its too long and too heavy to ever get far from the truck. But breaking rocks at 1200+ with 230's is pretty cool.

I would never buy a 300rum and when this barrel goes, I'm going smaller with it.

Not reloading, not shooting past 600 and wanting a 18"ish barrel screams I DO NOT WANT/NEED A RUM

Steve300XCW, what kind of yardage is the 2nd clearcut from your position ? Looks like fun !

Been a few years since I was out that way.

Google earth says the far left edge of that first cut is 1200. And the road in the lower left side of that 2nd cut, is a bit over 2k

No it doesn’t.
Similar results to me means much less recoil with ease of shooting. Simiilar and same are different to each other in terms of description. Either a sufficient suppressor or sufficient brake will provide similar results but not same in my testing with my equipment. I am a side baffle brake fan though as it allows a much more significant difference than nothing. A lti xc with a e brake on a rum is similar to a ti pro 5 but not same. In the end the goal is to have a good experience that you can utilize to meet your goals. Either way good luck. My rums are sub 11 pounds for comparison
