300 RUM Lets hear it

When comparing velocities it gets confusing because of this or that. SAAMI pressure barrels and measured velocities are more uniform than uncle Todd’s handloads in a mega magnum compared with someone else’s factory loads in a Proffit Reeping Cartridge in a completely different brand of rifle. Pressure barrels are closer to match barrels than typical cheap factory production tubes, but for better or worse it’s nice seeing professionally tested loads in multiple cartridges. Here’s the SAAMI pressure data for a few big 300 mags and it matches what I’d expect: 200 gr 300 PRC is about 2,800 fps, 300 Wby 2,900 fps, and 300 Rum about 3,000 fps.

Length is more important than weight - as the long bullets, that have good BCs, take up a lot of room in those cases.

Try a long (lrx, ablr, eldm, eldx) bullet for a normal throat length, like the OP would use :)

I personally dont have a use for a rifle that CAN NOT shoot factory ammo, even if i reload. Why have a 300 rum or nosler - with a throat that makes any load, except handload, worthless? I dont like the idea of not being a plane ride or several hour drive away from taking a few hours to make a few boxes of ammo and buying more. Beyond that - you dont actually have reloading data when you are doing that with the C.O.A.L being much different.

Unknown munitions, copper creek, and a few other custom load makers show 300 prc speed as superior/even at worst with anything over 200 grains. 250 grains (what id want to shoot really long range) its not even close.

As far as ridiculous prices - thats what i imagine the struggle for brass will be like when the 30 nosler dies off from lack of support and interest and 30 nosler/rum isnt offered in many riflles. Factory ammo in the RUM and Nosler will be a fortune.
🤨
My Nosler is SAAMI spec, no long throat. Shoots factory ammo fine. Like I said, I had a 300prc. It was lackluster for the extra action length needed. I bought enough 30N brass to last through my barrels life expectancy.

If I were stuck with factory ammo only, I wouldn’t look at the Nosler. I would get a 300wm.

Here is a quick read if you care, from the other side of rokslide.

After looking more closely at the original post, nothing I suggested transfers to a stubby 19” barrel. Lol
