Heading to Alaska for moose and grizzlies in 2027. I currently have a Fierce CT Rogue 300 PRC I was planning on taking but for some reason and I think for just wanting one, I am considering trading it in and purchasing a Weatherby 338 RPM Mark V in either the Apex or Backcountry 2.0 and taking it with me. Please, help talk me into or out of this decision. Any pro's and con's of each would be much appreciated.

I’m not swaying you one way or another but on the weatherby rifles pay attention to the barrel length. Depending on the model they range from 18” lightweight steel, 20” carbon, 24” heavier fluted steel. That length will greatly change your velocities

What ballistic advantage are you gaining to offset the more expensive and harder to find ammo?

I don’t think there is too significant of a difference in all the research I have done. I’m just making sure I’m not missing anything or if their is any significant “real world” experience between the two.

I have a 300 prc and a 340 weatherby. I love them both. But what you gain in energy in one you gain in drop and efficiency in the other. It’s kind of a toss up to me. They both hammer big game and do a great job. I don’t think you’d have any issues with your prc. But the 338 is outstanding. I’ll attach two charts from hendershots on the 300 prc and 340 loads I’m playing with before I start handloading both of these. It’s pretty interesting but you really can’t go wrong with either

AK resident here, I hunt and shoot both species your going after every year. 30cal anything (almost) with be just fine up here for everything under 400 yards. If your headed to the peninsula after 10ft brownies, then look at a step up, maybe. But for grizz and moose your 300prc will do great.

That being said, red herring here, i dont hunt with R700 platforms like your Fierce due to the bolt opening on safey while busting brush. Personal preference that the Weathery MKV your considering solves, im a fan of those.
