300 PRC ammo choice

I’m looking for real life experiences on what ammo you guys prefer and what has or has not worked for you.

I’m leaning towards Hornady 225 gr. EDL-X or Berger 245 gr elite hunter.

I am going on a moose hunt in northern BC.

I have read some people have had issues with crossing the border with reloaded ammo?

And I’ve read that as long as you have ammo in labeled cases that it will be fine?

I usually only reload for all of my main hunting rifles so this is what I’m trying to figure out too.
But regardless if I am taking reloads or factory I’m interested in hearing how the Berger’s or Hornady held up?
Some guys hate Berger’s for hunting but I’ve killed more deer, elk and bear with 210 VLD Berger’s with my 300WM and I’ve never had an issue.
Thoughts?

As mentioned above, go with whichever is most accurate in your rifle. Of my three 300 PRCs, not one of them shot for crap with Hornady Match or Precision hunter. I reloaded for them with the 212 eld-x and the 225 eld-m and the accuracy just wasn't what I had hoped for. That said, 2 of them did quite well with Berger 245 EOL ammo, and I load 245 EOL for all 3 and they all group in the 0.22-0.34 MOA with handloads. Factory Berger is more like 0.5 ish -0.7 ish. I can collet pull the bullets and reseat them to the known good depths and they shoot just as well as the handloads.

I don't know what you have for time and money, but there are some custom ammo manufacturers. If you reload, I'd start there. That way, at least you have quality brass to reload.

Thank you for the feedback on real life experiences, this is what I’m looking for.
All of my reloads shoot under 1/2” MOA but I’m still looking for info if people have issues crossing the US border into Canada with custom reloaded ammunition?

Contact the Canadian side of the border crossing you will be going through, they are the ones that will either give you grief or not.

I crossed 2 years ago with 40 rounds of reloads. They were not in a manufacturer's box. This was a small border crossing north of spokane. There were three of us. Me and one other guy had handloads. Nothing was ever said to either of us. YMMV

I can't recall which crossing we went through, but the guys we dealt with didn't make a big thing out of the guns. They asked more questions about the whiskey and Copenhagen than anything. With three of us, I only think we were there about 20 minutes.

My question is, why are you so concerned about, whether or not, the ammunition is reloaded? If it is in a factory carton and you have lets say 2-3 spent cases...How are the border patrol going to determine that you reloaded it and its not just a box of ammo you shot a 3rd group with? OR...just a full box of reloads in a factory carton that has been nicely opened instead of torn open? Honestly, how many dudes are going to be able to look at reloaded or custom ammo in a factory carton and say...that's not "x" ammo? It's not like they're going to strip it down and look at some database of components to see if you're lying. They don't want handloads for the same reason a lot of places won't buy or allow you to sell your handloads. They don't want someone potentially being injured from someones pet load blowing up.

As long as you're not some miserly old fart buying estate sale bullets; and willy nilly loading them, only to later find out the hard way, that some of the bullets in that open .277 box were .284s, then you have nothing to worry about....Yes this really happened to someone at the local range.

Now, If you roll over the border with a Hornady Match box and they open it and your brass is from several headstamps...or another manufacturer altogether...then they might know.

Try out a couple of different boxes and see which one shoots best, then roll with that. I’d go 215 Berger.

My 300PRC with a 26" barrel shoots Berger 215 very accurately.

I shoot Bergers in most of my rifles and have killed elk, black bear and tons of deer and they all drop in their tracks or run a very short distance.

BUT........ My guide is insistent that I use a bonded bullet and recommends Nosler partitions and Barnes-X!

Does anyone have pros and cons, what are your thoughts?

Haven't had any issues crossing the border with reloads. I will say though that mine all had the proper head stamp on them for the weapon I was traveling with. TSX, TTSX, or accubonds would be my choice from 168 to 200gr if they flew good. The accubonds are bonded partitions are not, The accubonds if they go all the way through will give a larger blood trail. I haven't been able to recover a barnes bullet in 20 years but have on the accubonds. Is he ok with a mono?
