I will admit I don't know a whole lot about those others, if I didn't hunt with the 300 RUM it was the 7MM.
I need to read up more on the 300 PRC. But my next caliber will be a 6.5, won't replace the RUM, but just something a little lighter to shoot.
Hope to see some N570 soon.

It’s not!
I would pick the 300 Rum, 30 Nos or hell even the 300 PRC over the 300 Nancy.

I'm sure the rum can push the same bullets faster so why would the 300 Nancy be last on your list??

One of the main reasons is the bolt face. I can make anything off mag bolt face. The bigger BF and I am stuck with very few caliber options. I also wonder why the military dumped it? I also saw weird velocity spreads that I see in no other big magnums. Why was it so hot and now it's not? Sometimes hype is just that.

Then again it could be me:)

I drink RUM.....

With more brass options now I think it’s coming into its prime.

I disagree, I see the PRC and the very underrated 30 Nolser making the 300 Nancy even less desirable. Mainly because no major company is loading mass ammo for it. Berger and Hornady do, but only one is serious about it.

Some gunsmiths are magical. I would love to see the life of that barrel and brass:) Nothings free.

The great thing about America, we have lots of options. If that's what you want don't let me or anyone stop you. You do your homework and it will do its no doubt.

If you go Improved go, 300 Lapua AI. It's a monster. But after last year I promised myself no more fireforming. haha

I think you misunderstood me. I’m a RUM fan, and see no real gains with the Norma.

I think the PRC and Nosler are splitting hairs. But I agree; if they make some good factory ammo people will buy them and they will become popular.

I think I've been hitting Ryan's RUM.....lol
I've owned several and keep saying I was going to go a different big 30 route and ended up at the same old place, big old RUM in the case. But this one shoots lights out better then any other....but then this one is pretty much a custom with all the work done to it. Though if I ever decided to put a can on it....would look pretty dang funny on the end of a 30 inch barrel......would make one helluva squirrel gun,......30 inch barrel with an 8-10 inch can on it.....maybe next time Ryan is down here in Boise we can take our RUM's out and see how they compare.

I like the 300 Norma. Not saying it is better or worse, just different.

My take:
  • It is shorter, less likely to have mag length issues. Custom RUMs typically avoid this problem anyway
  • It has notably less case capacity than a RUM, the only way people can claim "RUM like" performance is to compare a RUM with a bullet stuffed way into the case to a Norma with a bullet seated way out
  • I buy into the Short/fat case design inherent accuracy. My norma shot everything i put into it into tiny little groups. It did exhibit velocity spikes with RL33 and Retumbo, but not with other powders.
  • I wish it had at least 30 degree shoulders.. Not sure if they made it this way because the 338 norma fed better in the machine guns that way?
  • There have been notable brass to chamber to sizing die issues with the Norma
    • With Norma brand brass, the web area above the head expands and none of the factory sizing dies i'm aware of size this down, causing sticky extraction around firing #3
    • Norma Brass has also had issues with primer pocket deterioration
    • Peterson and Lapua brass makes a big difference, I see this as an advantage for the Norma
  • Fewer factory options available for Norma (Berger, Hornady, Norma, and some smaller specialty loaders)
  • It is a hassel to need a Lapua mag bolt face in most cases. However, having this on a desert tech also allows me to use the same bolt face and spin up a new barrel the new Tubb 33xc if I so desire

Is slightly better barrel life, better brass (if Lapua and Peterson get it back out), and debatably better intrinsic accuracy worth giving up some performance and dealing with a different bolt face? Probably not for most people but I'm goofy like that. Disclaimer - I've never owned a RUM.

*Que Ryan's previous sig line about a man with experience not being at the mercy of a man with an opinion. :giggle:

Inherently accurate.... read everything I can find on that subject....Still,l haven't seen anything to prove it. BUT, I know bigfoot is real.

I've been able to shoot lots of rifles in my life. A RedRock 28 Nolser was the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. Yet I never see Inherently accurate next to its name.

That word gets thrown around a lot. Rifles are accurate for a lot of reasons. My most accurate rifle is a Remington 788 in .222 Remington. I did inherit it though. mtmuley

You need to try one. Great excuse for a new rifle. mtmuley

Just in case my bases aren't covered with 300 WSM, 300 WM, and 300 NM

The win mag hasn't proven it is sufficiently accurate yet, might have a new barrel coming but hard to abandon what I have components for.

My most accurate rifle is a second hand Savage in 7RM. Maybe the .284 bullet is the accurate part? Plus, they kill elk like lightning. ;)

As far as the 300 Norma goes, the bolt face is kind of a pain. I actually prefer the 300 Winny myself for the barrel life.
