.30-06 175 grain Terminal Ascent for Moose

Use the rifle you’re more accurate with. Keep your range under control to ensure your impact velocity is above ~2000 fps. The terminal ascent is not a great bullet for reliable low speed expansion.

I’d check to see if Hornady Grey Box (precision hunter ELDX) shoots well in your 3006. Would extend your range a good bit by being able to have reliable expansion at 1600-1800fps.

Moose aren’t that tough when shot with rifles. Quicker expanding bullets will extend your range and lead to quicker death, all things being equal.
More expansion with the eldx, perhaps.
As far as extending the range I’d say it’s a wash. BCs and bullet weights are virtually the same. If the OPs gun shoots the TA really well then keep shooting them rather then messing around with other rounds. On the flip side, if he gets a shot at a bull point blank, I’d personally prefer the TA over a cup and core or match bullet.

Damn boys, I keep coming back and for some reason am feeling like I want a 30-06 and some TAs…

Funny you say that. I’m almost 50 and bought my first hunting rifle about two years ago or so. A .30-‘06. Been guiding for 25 years and there was no question what gun I wanted to use. I had bought guide guns before but never a hunting rifle…now when I go out this fall for myself. It’s the dirty thirty….

Lots of good info in this thread. I bet there could be a round that would be better suited, but I was just asking about this one.

I’m from Ohio. A traditionally non rifle state. I have done some rifle hunting but never long range. The longest rifle range within an hour of my house is 200 yards. I won’t ever say I’m comfortable shooting at any game beyond 300 yards. So a bullet that performs within that range is ideal.

Now that you know I’m not a rifleman, this bullet and rifle combo shoots legit .7 inch five shot groups in my hands from a bench at 100 yards. Never in my life have I been able to do that.

The rifle does not like 180 grain partitions, fusions, or corelock. I bet there are plenty it likes. I think I’ll use my money to buy more TA and keep on practicing!

The Terminal Ascent is a great bullet I shot a Moose last fall in NF with a 200 gr out of a 300 Min Mag at 165 yd. Did not recover bullet do to pass through Moose went maybe 10 yds They also shot well out of my 7PRC Great bullet choice
