Hunting about 8600 ft in co, wondering if there is still going to be rutting action for muley's. Oct 22-30. Had to cancel my scouting trip, due to work.

Also have a bear tag... Y'all think the bears'll be denned up by then or still out feeding?

Won't be rutting yet most likely. Maybe some pre-rut action depending on pressure. Bears in western Colorado at least are eating good right now and will probably have what they need to pack it in early - there are always a few around into early November though.

Thanks! Didn't realize that the rut is late. I thought it was earlier than my season. (Nube--- usually hunt archery bucks in velvet)

Yeah, kind of early for the deer rut, but It will be on a buck's mind. So, they might be near the does.

Bear is a toss up. The sows may be starting to den up, but the boars should still be out. Of course the weather and how well they fattened up already matters too.

Let me ask this... I've heard black bear meat is fantastic this time of year. But is there still bears that have decent capes too? Or do most boars have pretty bad rubs

Bears rub in the spring, so in the fall the hides are at the best.

As for the meat? It depends on what they're feeding on. It's never been my favorite, but some people love it.

We hunt 2nd season Colorado quite a bit at a similar elevation and don't see rutting activity. That being sad with the late dates this year there may be some in low pressure areas by the end of the hunt.

The rut where we hunt usually starts going towards the end of the 3rd rifle season. Last year we could tell it was starting to get going from the way deer were acting day to day. By the end of our hunt, the temps finally dropped into the teens in the morning and the mature bucks showed their faces. We knocked down a 158, 168, and 192 on the last 2 mornings and their necks were swollen up and they were definitely actively looking for does.

Agree with what was said above. Rut is usually late in 3rd if it even hits then. That is one reason the 4th season tags are so limited.

2 years ago we elk hunted 3rd season outside of Durango. There were still bears everywhere because there was still plenty of food. The wet summer and mild winter meant lots of acorns and they were still going to town on them. That was between 9000-10,000' the first week of November.
