I built one on a long Savage action last year, then decided I'd rather have it on a short action because I didn't plan to run heavy and long bullets. My savages have a 3.00" box, which is just about right for 140-150 grainers and even conventional 160's.
I had a 7mm-08 Tikka that I very nearly had reamed to .284 Win, but eventually sold it to a friend and went back to Savage so I could do the work myself.
With a 22" barrel, be careful with some of the velocities you see quoted. I was never able to get close to some of the velocities I read about with my 22" or my current 21" barrels. Rob's 2760-ish (above) sounds about right from a 26" barrel. So dropping 20-25 fps. per inch, that puts you at about 2660-2680 fps. with 175's, which I still think is optimistic. But every barrel is unique. My McGowan barrel was about 25-40 fps. faster than my X-Caliber barrel.
For my needs, the .284 Win really shines with 140-150 class bullets. I'm getting 2990-3000 fps. with 140 grain Noslers in a short action, loaded to 2.98" COAL. That's the best overall performance I've seen yet but I haven't played with anything over 160 grains in either of my builds. I will add that I can barely tell the difference in recoil between my .284 with 140's going 3k and my 7mm-08 with 140's going 2880. Those 140's out of the .284 are downright pleasant to shoot.
