280AI vs 7 Backcountry

I'll make an offer of $1 each for the bad barrels.
My experience has been the opposite. One barrel sent the first 3 round into 0.22" and other into the 0.3"s

Ha. I was fortunate they took both the .308 barrels back. I promise I tried countless factory rounds and killed myself over reloads with those barrels. I did leave out they are AR10 style barrels, so they were not bolt guns. I haven’t done much reloading for the 6.5 but what I have done and the factory ammo I’ve tried, I haven’t been too impressed. I am not bashing the company at all, I just think I’ve been one of the unfortunate ones who didn’t get a “tac driver”.

Dang, was hoping to read you got that Savage UL in 280ai. Its at the top of my list for the reasons you listed. Barrel 22" or less, under 6lb, and comes in lefty. Was looking to pick it up as a mule deer/elk. Seems like the vast majority of those rifles seem to be really good shooters.

I think I’m in agreement with you. The suppresser part I’m not to worried. I don’t really understand the reasoning behind hunting suppressed. Why look for a shorter lighter rifle then add all the weight and length back? Also unless you’re shooting subsonic, is the noise reduction really that big of a deal? Just my opinion. Back to the calibers though, I do like everything I’ve read on the 280AI. Will a 1:9 twist 22” barrel give me any issues with any factory ammo?

Yes, it is that awesome and worth it. Recoil reduction and sound suppression, what’s not to like? Game animals do not run away when you shoot suppressed. I have yet to find a down side to shooting ALL my hunting rifles suppressed nowadays. About the only thing I don’t shoot suppressed are my CCW pistols.

I jumped on 6.8W pretty early. I love it, but I’m not convinced that the market is going to follow me and that I’ll have enough ammo around to be banging away with it in 20 years.

I bought my kid one and I know two others at work that have them. And you don’t need to depend on just Winchester for brass now that adg makes it.

I agree with all the benefits, I’m just trying to have a compact rifle, a suppressor would negate the shorter barrel. The only option to keep it short with a suppressor would be using a folding chassis.

AK willows? That’s the concern I’m getting out of the thread?

How do you carry your rifle through willows?

What’s the max range you want to kill game with this rifle?

If having a a way short barrel is of main importance, there are plenty of 16-20” options (excluding the 7 BC) that still give you great ballistics to a majority of shot presentations most hunters will take.

I hunt with a 20” CTR in .308, TBAC 7 Ultra, and it kills everything I point it at. The way I sling my rifle, it’’s not much taller than my head. I rarely have it hang up under branches. I killed my elk at 600 yards last year with that rifle. If I had to contend with willows and would be comfortable with a touch shorter max range, I’d cut 4” off the barrel and use the same can, no problem. For me anyways, I would work around the can for hunting…meaning it’s a necessity and I’ll make other sacrifices so my rifle wears that can.
