I have a Defiance action cert that Im trying to decide how to use. I currently have a 6.5 creed for NRL hunter and a 7 SAUM for hunting.

Any of you guys running one of the two of these? Im curious on velocity and barrel lengths. I would think a cartridge like this would be a slammer for out west. Im also curious on your reloading process. Which brass did you start with, neck down process, dies etc?

I would think, a 25 SAUM pushing 135 Bergers at 2900+ out of a 20" tube would be a great deer rifle.

Any insight would be awesome. Thanks

I am currently building a 25 saum, just waiting on my pbb prefit. I do think you could get more than 2900 fps with a 20” barrel. I agree it would be a hammer out west hence why im building one. Great bcs low recoil and not crazy over bore.

Out of curiosity, why 25 SAUM over 25 PRC? I have a 7 SAUM and have brass but thinking out loud, it would seem to be better to neck down 6.5 PRC brass.

6.5 saum brass would be a bit easier.

If you have 7saum bushing dies, saum makes sense and you will gain ~75fps + some recoil.

I chose 25 saum so if i need to put more powder to get desired speeds i could. Especially with a shorter barrel. 25 prc to me wasn’t enough of a gain over the 6.5 prc

Picked up my new 25 SAUM a few weeks ago. Mines built on a BAT Igniter action, Bartlein 22in barrel, UM's DBM with their short action XL mags that allow up to a 3.150 OAL and MCS-PH stock. It turned out really well.

Defensive Edge built mine and Shawn worked up the first load with 134 ELD-M and RL26. First seven down the barrel were to find pressure then he shot a three shot group that went .182 at 3190fps. I imagine once it gets a few more down the pipe it'll likely settle in right around 3200. I'm shooting it with a new DA Nomad LTi XC and recoil isn't even noticeable and it's crazy how quiet it is.

If someone wanted a little more speed but still wants to stay with a short action the 25 Western or 25 WSM would both be good choices. A 25 Western would be basically a 25 SAUM Improved and necking down 270 WSM brass to .257 would be equally as easy as the Western. ADG makes brass for all three of the above. I'm using ADG 6.5 SAUM brass for mine.

In a long or Tikka action the 25-7PRC builds are launching the heavies a little faster and appear to be shooting equally as well.

Good info, thank you.

I am probably leaning 25 - 6.5 PRC if I choose to build one. I have a 7 SAUM that pushes 168s at 2960. Im thinking a 25 doing around the same velocity with a 135 will have a recoil marginally more than a juiced up 6.5 creed and have a ballistic advantage. Id use the 7 for elk and larger, the 25 for deer and smaller.

the 25 for deer and smaller.
Taking the above into consideration maybe a 25 Creedmoor would be the perfect fit. It'd still have a ballistic advantage over the 6.5 CM and recoil would be about the same as a 6.5CM with 140's.

Yeah, I was considering it. The problem is, I would need to run a 26” barrel to approach the velocities I’d get in a 20” PRC/SAUM. The primary use would be for hunting where having the shorter barrel would be desirable. I still have probably 1000 rds, maybe more, of barrel life on my 6.5 creed. Not enough difference between the 6.5 creed and 25 creed to justify having both right now.
