I've read through a few old threads on the subject, but they seem to go in opposite directions from my questions. If this is all already covered elsewhere, please direct me to it.

Want to build a 223 trainer that will be comparable to a fast 6mm (6saum, 6 um, etc) I'm also building - same stock (TBD) and similar action. Don't know if having the same barrel length is worth jumping through the hoops. Balance and handling will probably be somewhat different no matter what. There is a strong likelihood that I will go with a Defiance AntiX for the 6mm. What would be a comparable action to use for a 223? Don't want to spend that much money on a trainer. I'd considering going the Tikka route for a trainer (and possibly the 6mm, but I might be locked in to a defiance action there). How much difference is there between an antix and a tikka action?

A 22 Creedmoor has also crossed my mind instead of the 223. This doesn't sound like a good idea though from the barrel life research I've done: supposedly 800-1000 rounds from a 22 creed and five thousand plus from a 223. Does this sound right? Can you choke back a 22 creed for practice and then amp it up for hunting, if desired, to get the barrel life into the thousands? This rifle could also be useful in the future when my kids start hunting, or if I decide that I want to go shoot a brown bear, like some of you 😮.

Random Questions:
-Is there a practice bullet that is ballistically similar to the 77 TMK which is more available and cheaper? Would be nice to practice with a cheap one and hunt with the TMK.
-Would you buy a factory rifle or action and prefit? Which model and brand?
-Does it matter if the trainer is a tank with a heavy barrel and the 6mm is ~8lb?
-Are you guys reloading 223 for trainer rounds or ? (I reload everything that I shoot now pretty much, but don't know if there is an easier way for this and how much it matters. I suspect that reloading will almost always produce better accuracy and be better)
-If reloading, can you get away with using random 5.56/223 brass or are you guys using matching headstamps (I know the answer for max consistency and accuracy, but it would be nice to load up 500 rounds with cheap brass)
-What brand brass if purchasing bulk matching headstamp?
-I have small base 5.56 dies already. Probably worth it to buy a set of 223 dies with a micrometer seater for max consistency?
-What barrel length would you go with on the trainer. I'm thinking 20" for the 6mm. Would be nice for kids to hunt suppressed with the trainer and not have it be a flag pole. I don't know if possible (probably not), but it would be nice to have it behave ballistically similar to the 6mm.
-What twist rate? Shooting 77 tmks and the new 88 grainers for hunting.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer any of my many questions. My young kids appreciate it too - I've been spending way too much time on here lately reading through thousands of posts! I'm sure I can figure it all out on my own, but hey what are discussion forums for!?

Lots of bullets are ballisticlly similar to 77, not so much terminally. Also barrel life is alot higher than 5k on a 223. Do yourself a favor & go with tikka

I would get a threaded 16” Tikka .223, put a suppressor on it, and shoot ADI 69-grain or Frontier 5.56 62-grain through it. Put it in a similar stock/chassis if you want.

My life is too short and my job pays too well per hour to spend time reloading .223.

Edit - the ADI .223 69-grain ammo is great. I get 2750 FPS from my 16” Tikka and consistent 10-shot groups about an inch. The Frontier 5.56 62-grain gets 3150 FPS and also shoots really well in it. I don’t know what it costs now, but I got it for around $0.45/round last summer.

Start with a Tikka .223 and run it. You’ll likely decide to build your fast 6 mm on a Tikka and save money. Spend it on tons of ammo. A timney trigger in the Tikka shoots just like my 700 clone TT Special. I shoot the factory triggers in all but one rifle, and they are crisp and more than satisfactory.

I run a Tikka .223 Wylde 18” trainer and my fast 6 mm is a 19” 6mm NSI (6 PRC). Handling is identical. A 16” to 18-19” will handle very similarly. My 14” 22 creed is not much different than my 16” and 18” rifles.

A 22 creed can match the 6 mag ballistically, but they both have short barrel life. You can’t match ballistics without matching barrel life unless they are substantially different configurations like barrel length.

Mine are rifles I screwed together with the Preferred prefit barrels. They both hammer, as is typical with these prefits.

You don’t need a prefit with the .223, there are some good deals right now for a threaded Tikka on Euro optic.

This is the latest group with FGMM ammo in my .223
And pics of the earliest configuration as I was putting my first set of Tikka together.

223 for trainer. I use aac black sabres, share a 100 yard zero with my tmks though lower mv so wont extrapolate to distance.

I have Tikkas in 223 and 22CM, and 6CM set up the same. No experience with AntiX, but the cost of two actions is much higher than two Tikkas, and I doubt you will see any benefit from AntiX's other telling people you have them. The easy button is a 223 and 243 (fast twist) from Tikka, cut and thread the barrels if needed, and with the money you saved, buy other needed stuff.
For practice, I use Hornady Aeromatchs in 75gr or 77gr, and they fly the same as the 77TMK.
I reload and mostly use Hornady or Starline brass. I don't pick up brass off the range other than mine.
The micrometer bullet seater is nice, but not needed.
Barrel length for me is 16"-18".
1-8 is my 223 twist. You will likely have to work to get the 75, 80, and 88's in the ELDM bullet to group. One being magazine length, and the other will be the chamber. In the 75/80's, I can get decent accuracy when I use magazines that allow for a longer COAL, but the 88's don't work for my current barrel. The Aeromatchs and the TMKs work great.

Since you mentioned your kids more than once I'd would also suggest a tikka 22lr. It has been pretty handy for my kids(me too for that matter) to shoot rimfire and centerfire set up the same way. Like has been mentioned eurooptic has some great specials going on. You could probable get Tikkas in 22lr, 1-8" 223, and 1-8" 243 for the price of one Defiance action trigger BM and barrel. I like suppressors myself but they are really nice with kids.

Is $769 for a .223 tikka a good deal? Blued barrel OK? (thought I saw somebody poo pooing them somewhere on Rokslide). What twist do I want for 77 and 88 grain TMKs?

Thanks!

Man, I'm having a hard time believing that a Defiance action sucks :)
Get it wet and dirty in the mountains and then try to run it fast. I have. And have with Tikkas as well. There’s no comparison. People need to stop looking at the price tag and the fancy “features” and marketing and evaluate things for how they actually perform.
As far as reliability, have a read through the rifle snow and ice test performed by @Formidilosus to see how REM 700 based triggers stand up.

This is the one I was thinking about. I got my oldest daughter the same one but paid a little bit more. It's came down in price some since I got hers. I wouldn't hold my breath on the 88's but the 1-8' will be fine for 75's/77's.
