I’m not completely comfortable with the distance I can shoot to from field positions on game now with the 223 velocity that I already have available.

Personally I have no need for more until I can shoot better.
So I’ll probably never need more.

I use for predator night hunting. So flat and fast is a win.

The bullets are equal diameter...so... (88 - 77) / 77 = (88*7000/.224^2 - 77*7000/.224^2) / 77*7000/.224^2

The former is just a lot quicker shorthand for someone that actually understands math... but also understands there are so many other variables in play that actual results will tell the story well, while "this times that divided by that times this other thing" will probably not.

I came to add that my group of shooters (myself and 2 other most of the time) have killed 60ish hogs so far this summer using 223's with thermals. From little shits to "hook it to the ranger and drag it out of the field" size. 99% of the time the first one shot in the group folds like a napkin and the runners don't go far after being hit. 77 grain hollow points are what we're shooting right now. We need to start taking death pictures again.

I've thought a good bit about building a bolt action 223 to have for my youngest son to get started on when he gets centerfire cartridges.

You got me, all the shooting and killing you’ve done vs everyone else’s shares and you wanted more info? I am genuinely curious, if not totally confused, to what you’re worried about or expecting? Was his report surprising to you somehow? Is this a paralysis by analysis thing? I’d be far more worried about all the stuff already well covered by all the sub .25 sd options and getting the best fit as the lower limits options but there is nothing to worry about in any .25 sd tipped match option as you’ve moved into that realm of anytime anywhere any angle any game...you just not trusting that yet? By all means let’s keep seeing the 88 kills from either, good luck trying to spot a difference, I am rooting for ya. Love to know how that would translate to average recovery distance as not sure what else you could apply it to usefully.

I already use that ‘tipped match’ .25 formula in everything I have but now just added one that goes to the minimum here in 73 gr m at .2 sd (expecting 25% less good, but still good enough haha) and can see how it does for us vs the centuries proven(cup core rapid expansion tipped match etc) .25 sd. It’s funny how people see these things, after construction the the numbers and 1. Is sd then 2. Is bc, then get into velocities and distances numbers from there then cartridge options from there. So you’re saying people here do that in different order? , go by bullet name first? Haha, just funnin, f’n weirdos, you can’t fack it up if you get to tipped match at .25 sd or higher, just get to enjoy the show and walk right up to everything, the way I see it is the 88 was always where the 22 wanted to be, to get out of the potential niche class lol, just needed that extra 13-14% to get in the mainstream zero worry big boy club, you’ll like how this movie ends but it was easily predictable from the opening scene
