.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

A doe a day is wild. Losing 10-20lbs on a doe is nothing, if you can shoot that many. 😆
I love it. Lots of lists have Alabama as state with second most deer in the USA.

We def don’t have rules that lead toward world class antler scores. I’ve killed two booners the last two years that were both 140’s. Most never get a 150” deer.

That said. We can hunt for 4 months and shoot a deer every time we go. I love to hunt so I think the trade off is worth it. And the state wants population control for auto accidents and such.

It is pretty great for putting meat in the freezer. And the one a day is actually a reduction from the two a day we used to be able to kill until about a decade or so ago, and for a while at least there was no limit on the total number of bucks either, just no more than one of your two a day could be a buck. I remember doing the math at one point and it worked out to being able to legally kill something like 220 deer a year.

Probably the most prolific whitetail hunter of all time is here and I know him well. He has gotten up there in age. But he has killed thousands of deer. Fed many many food shelters through his years.

Look up Dr Bob shepherd. His book “Whitetails” is the best and I give it out as gifts a lot.

I lived in Michigan for a short stint and this makes me miss that aspect, lots of tags and getting to hunt multi weapon for 4 months

I grew up in west TN and hunted there until 2019. I miss it. I miss seeing 40+ deer in an afternoon and shooting 2-3 does at a time.

I largely started hunting in IA and didnt realize until I left just how unique a situation that was.

Yep. Normally if I/we shoot one we go on and shoot 2-3. If I’m going to mess with one might as well make it count…haha. Between us at home and what we cook on shift at work we eat a lot of deer so I like to put up a dozen or more. Every other year we have crop damage permits too so that helps out.

I've actually met him a couple times, though I've never read the book. Got it downloaded on the Kindle now so I'll fix that soon.

So how big are these WT does you fellas are shooting?

A good mulie doe will exceed 150 lbs. I’ve seen a few bigger but not many.

The three I've shot this year have been 110, 115, and 130 pounds, that's truly on the hoof not field dressed or anything.
