If I'm only going to be using the Tikka factory magazines this year, is there much benefit to loading my own rounds of '77 TMK for hunting? This gun won't be my main hunting rifle. It will just be a trainer and backup hunting rifle. So, it kinda seems like it wouldn't be much benefit to loading my own 77tmk
Hand loading is a lot cheaper than buying factory Black Hills. If I had unlimited ammo budget I would just buy the BH by the case and not worry about handloading.

But I don't.

I would too, but this will only be a trainer and backup hunting gun. I'll buy the cheap AAC ammo for training and maybe 140 rds for hunting.

I've got a Tikka takeoff 223 in as lite contour, a 223 bolt, and go gauge .

Let's hope it headspaces correctly! I'm planning to have it cut and threaded and was planning on 16 in for minimum weight and length. Now I'm uncertain of that and thinking about 18 in. The plan was to work on building a Tikka as packable as possible, so I wanted to do short barrel and folding stock or takedown stock. But, I'm really not sure I want to go with a stupid chassis.

I'll use it with my scythe suppressor.

Why can't somebody make a friggin wooden takedown stock for a Tikka?

What do you guys think, 16 or 18 in? 50 FPS is not very much gain
I am used to hunting with rifles with a 24" or 26" barrel, so for suppressed rifles, I simply refuse to go longer than 20" barrel (assuming a 6" suppressor). Things get too ungainly for hunting in my woods with something longer than that. My two suppressed deer rifles are a 6.5 CM, which is going to have a 20" barrel and a Scythe Ti (~6") on it; and a 6.5 Grendel, which has an 18" barrel and wears the same Scythe Ti. A lot of people urged me to get a 16" barrel on the Grendel, but I like the marginally better ballistics and the fact that it has the same length as my other light carbines.

Shot a couple does with the aac 77 gr tmk this week. First one was 215 yds broadside, got a complete pass through. She went 20-30 yds and expired. Second one was 205 yds standing straight on. She made it 20-30 yards as well before expiring. The internal damage was impressive on both.

I wish I could find it that cheap! My 16" RAR 5.56 loves the Hornady factory 73eldm ammo any my daughter shoots the heck out of that rifle.

Looks like shipping on most of those put them around $1.18 a round.
Maybe not a great deal, but not bad.

Recent vids turned me on to the idea that 6mm arc is the future of big hitting smaller caliber cartridges. I'd love to see another thread exploring the terminal ballistics on big game of various 6 arc loads. Anyone tried it yet?

Just look at the 6mm thread. Filter the kills you see by stuff killed below about 2500 velocity.

Anything there applies to 6mm ARC.

I'm generally curious why not just buy a bunch of cheaper ammo for practice. And save your eldm for hunting? I shoot a ton of the aac 77 gr otm out to 600 yds, and they are $10/box.
Mainly because I like to set it and forget it. I buy the 73eldm by the case and just shoot the gun. I check the speeds with new ammo lots and update my ballistic calculator with the new speed.

I know this has been rehashed over and over, and this question has been answered 200 times probably already. I'm outta screen time and trying to decide.

I've got an ID elk and deer tag. Looks like no caliber minimums.

I've spent a thousand bucks in the last month trying different loads in my 300 WM and 7RM. I'm accurate enough to about 400 yards right now. But if 4-500 yards ends up my max, what do I gain over the 223/5.56?

My 5.56 bolt gun is very accurate with both 73 eldm's and 77 TMK's. Both with factory ammo. I do reload, but don't enjoy it. I have plenty of componets to load the 77 TMK, and assume I could beat factory offering velocities I've seen.

I ran the ELD M and TMK through Bergers Calculator.

I'm really struggling with this right now, and want to dedicate my range time to one rifle. My free time is very limited, and I feel like I'm going in circles.

I can afford a new rifle/barrel if I should change caliber.Screenshot_20250118_082806_Samsung Internet.jpgScreenshot_20250118_083052_Samsung Internet.jpg

I have killed 4 whitetails this year with 223 and 3 of the 4 were drt. The 4th went 30 yards.

I took my new 223 Wylde to range yesterday with BH 77TMK. Was less than 1moa at 1,2, and 300 yards. Was less than 2moa at 600 with a gusty 10mph crosswind. All the old timers were coming over and impressed I was able to do that with a little ole 223. I’m an average to slightly above average shot.

I have all the large calibers. But I just enjoy shooting the smaller more. I did take my first elk this year and did use a 6.5prc, but that was a lot smaller than what the old timers told me to take.

I have a 22 creedmoor coming. My plan is to use 223 on 99% of my deer less than 400 yards. For the occasional western trip I will use the 22 creed. Also will use that on coyotes b

Personally, if I lived in Idaho I’d stick with a 223/556 set of rifles and sell everything else.
